A guide to Veterans Day celebrations in, around Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Veterans Day will fall on Sunday, November 11, and Atlanta neighborhoods will be in full celebration of the annual holiday.

For those wishing to participate in the memorial by attending a local event, 11Alive has compiled a list of celebratory occasions taking place nearby over the weekend, from parades, ceremonies, parties and more.

While America observes Veterans Day, many local residents will gather downtown for the 30th Annual Georgia Veterans Day Parade. According to the Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta, Inc., the parade will begin on Saturday at 11:11 a.m., and stretch through Peachtree Street and Baker Street, and continuing around Centennial Olympic Park.

Later Saturday evening, the Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta, Inc. will throw the 2012 Freedom Ball. The black tie party brings Veterans together for fellowship, music, food, a silent auction, and a moving motivational speaker.

The Ball is set for Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in the Oceans Ballroom of the Georgia Aquarium.

Also on Saturday, there will be Veterans Day Celebration at Pemberton Place in Downtown Atlanta from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Those who attend can watch the parade, as the route runs alongside the venue.

Military personnel will be at the celebration, and will show military equipment, including an Apache helicopter, Paladin Howitzer and a UH-1H Huey helicopter from the Vietnam times. At noon, a special demonstration will be given by the U.S. Army's Silver Wings Parachute Team.

Communities outside the City of Atlanta are also gearing up for the holiday. In Lawrenceville, there will be a Veterans Day ceremony on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Fallen Heroes Memorial, which is on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Taking part in the celebration will be members of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and honor guard units from the Gwinnett County Corrections, Fire and Emergency Services, Police Department, Sheriff's Office and the Lawrenceville Police Department. Veterans Day celebrating will take place next week, as well. At Perimeter Church in Duluth, they will have theirs on November 15 at 9:30. That Thursday morning, the church will roll out a program to honor current and former members of the armed forces. 

A reception, also part of the program, is showcasing the mobile-D-Day museum.

Next, prior to the weekend, the will be an Open House and Veterans Recognition Ceremony in Morrow at the National Archives and Records Administration.

From 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., the public can take part in facility tours, patriotic music, workshops on NARA military holdings and online resources. All Veterans who attend will be recognized, and are welcome to wear their service hats and medals. For more information, call (770) 968-2100.

Dawsonville will also be celebrating Veterans Day on Saturday, with a parade at 9:30 on Saturday morning and ceremonies to follow at 11 a.m. Free to attend, the festivities kick off in the Downtown Dawsonville Square at the Old Courthouse.

Veterans will march in the parade, then the ceremonies will include speakers, a wreath-laying, a 21-gun salute, a colorguard, a service for Purple Heart recipients and a celebration for military, law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical personnel. This year, Veterans Day will bring out a horse show in Lavonia, at the Northeast Georgia Saddle Club. The Franklin County 4-H Veterans Day memorial Horse Show will ride on Saturday, with a 10 a.m. pleasure class and a running class at 2 p.m.

The horse show is a tribute to Veterans, as it will benefit the club's horsemanship drill team while all ages compete.

In Suwanee, celebrations are set to start at 11:11 a.m. at the Georgia Freedom Festival, at Town Center Park.

Throughout the day, until 5 p.m., concerts are scheduled that will feature local bands. The festival will benefit the Freedom Alliance Fund, which helps children of fallen soldiers. Town Center Park is located on Buford Highway. For more information, call (770) 446-8524.

Some crowds around Atlanta may feel like dancing. If so, Lawrenceville is holding a Veterans Day Dance on Saturday afternoon from 1 - 4 p.m. The dance costs $5 to attend, and is scheduled in Rhodes Jordan Park on E. Crogan Street.

Military, bands and those who attend cam groove to celebrate armed forces. Big band music will be a part of the show. Uniforms and period attire is welcome.  For more information, call (770) 822-5414.

The City of Atlanta won't be the only site for a parade. A Veterans Day Parade will march in Marietta, beginning in Marietta Square. The parade, set for 10 a.m., will last about an hour. A patriotic ceremony will follow immediately after.

Free to attend, the parade and ceremony is a project from the Marietta Kiwanis Club that will include marching bands, drill teams, floats, veterans' organizations and military vehicles.

Starting at Roswell Street Baptist Church, the parade will proceed to the Square, continue on South, West and East Park Square and finish on Lawrence Street. The ceremony will be held on the Square. For more information, call (770) 794-5502.

Other than parades and a horse show, motorcycles will also be used to celebrate Veterans Day. The Veterans Freedom Motorcycle Ride will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Veterans memorial Park in Tallapoosa.

For those interested in riding, the cost is $25 per bike Riders will get a t-shirt, American flag souvenir and lunch. The track is an 80-mile stretch escorted by police. Benefits go to Veterans Memorial Park. Registration opens at 9 a.m. before the ride. For more information, call (770) 537-4708.

Veterans Day celebrations will be held in Acworth, at the Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony. To take place at Cauble Park in Lake Acworth at 2 p.m., the ceremony will open with a ribbon-cutting, then continue with speeches and music at Patriots Point.

The celebration will pay tribute to all who have served in American military forces. For more information, call (770) 917-1234.

Texas Roadhouse locations near Atlanta are celebrating Veterans Day by giving away a free lunch on Monday, November 12 to military Veterans and active duty military. Restaurants in Douglasville, Hiram, Marietta, Newnan and Snellville are included, and will offer the lunch from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Ten entries will be available to choose from, plus a soft drink. Those participating will be asked to show proof of service including military or VA card, or discharge papers. The free meal does not apply to other family members.

Retailer Toys-R-Us will honor Veterans by extending a holiday discount to Veterans and their families, of 20 percent, on Sunday and Monday.

Military identification will be required at checkout. There is a limit of one item.  

Veterans Day is celebrated at local schools, too. Hampton Elementary in Henry County is inviting students, teachers, staff, parents and all Henry County residents to their annual Veterans Day Program.

To honor local Veterans, a gathering will take place at the school's gym on Friday, November 9 at 1:30 p.m.

In Covington, American Legion Post 32 will host a Veterans Day Service on Monday from 11 a.m. - noon. The service is scheduled to take place in Square Park, downtown.

Those north of Atlanta can celebrate Veterans Day in Woodstock, at a ceremony on Sunday. This year, the City of Woodstock will have a special addition to the event, Woodstock's Welcome Home.

The 50th anniversary of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam calls for tribute and recognition, according to the City of Woodstock. A Candlelight ceremony is set for 7 p.m. at the Park at City Center.

The celebration in Woodstock, to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love for the country, willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good is open to all who wish to attend.

Veterans Day celebration continues on Monday, November 12 in Sandy Springs, at a special ceremony. The event, held by the City of Sandy Springs, will pay tribute to military veterans and their families. If is open to the public and free to attend.

Included in the ceremony will be words from a keynote speaker, Major General (ret.) Maria Britt. She was the first female in the Georgia National Guard to become a two-star general, and the first woman to become Georgia Army Commander.

The Sandy Springs event to be held in Morgan Falls Overlook Park will begin at 11 a.m., music at 10:30 a.m.
