ATLANTA, Ga. -- All lanes on a short stretch of Howell Mill Road NW, between 14th Street and Huff Road, were closed Tuesday night, and Atlanta police were not sure whether Howell Mill would reopen some time on Wednesday, or later.
Neaby businesses remained open.
According to the Atlanta Water Department, an ongoing water leak has damaged the Howell Mill bridge that goes over the railroad tracks just north of 14th Street.
There is a crack in the middle of Howell Mill that runs north from 14th Street., right along the double yellow lines, widening as it gets closer to the bridge and ending at a large, sunken section of the bridge surface, in the northbound lanes -- a section that was about the width and length of a city bus and about four inches deep as of 11:00 p.m.
A police department spokesman, Sgt. Greg Lyon, said at the scene late Tuesday night that the Public Works Department bridge engineers would inspect the bridge infrastructure to see if the damage is to the asphalt, only, or if the bridge itself has been damaged.
Commuters in that part of NW Atlanta can use Northside Drive instead of Howell Mill Road.
Huff Road and 14th Street both remained open for east-west traffic, but those two thoroughfares are disconnected from each other due to the Howell Mill closure.
Just after midnight, a PR firm for the "Westside Provisions District" emailed a notice that businesses in the district would remain open:
Westside Provisions District remains open for business as usual despite the closure of the bridge at Howell Mill near 14th Street. Police have closed a stretch of Howell Mill Road from 14th Street to Huff Road due to a possible problem with the bridge on Howell Mill just north of 14th Street. The road closing is expected throughout Tuesday night and may continue into Wednesday, but WSPD stores and shops are open for business.

• Huff Road by Figo and the Huff Road entrance by Anthropologie
• 14th Street entrance to the parking deck
• Brady Avenue entrance (by West Egg)
The Howell Mill entrances north of 14th Street and south of Huff Road are temporarily closed.
DETOUR ROUTE: Bypass the blocked section of Howell Mill Road by taking Northside Drive between 14th and 17th Streets.
WSPD has hired off-duty police and private security to help direct traffic and ensure the easiest possible access to the affected north end of the district.
