Charter school amendment passed by voters

ATLANTA -- Georgia's charter school amendment was passed by voters Tuesday.

The amendment will create a new seven member state commission which will be able to authorize charter schools, despite any sort of denial by local school boards.

With more than 96 percent of the ballots counted, yes votes led by a 58-to-42 percent margin.

The measure was one of the more contentious amendments put before voters in recent years, with much in the way of vocal support on both sides of the battle.
