After tallying provisional and military ballots for several hours, challenger Eric Levett edged out longtime, incumbent Rockdale County Sheriff Jeff Wigington.

"I knew it would be a tight race. But I don't think anyone imagined it would be this close," Sheriff Wigington said as the votes were being counted.

Sheriff Wigington began the evening with a razor-thin, 18-vote lead. But as the night wore on, Wigington saw his lead diminished before being overtaken by Levett.

Levett, who has more than two decades of law enforcement experience, managed to unseat the incumbent sheriff as Democrats countywide saw large gains.
