Disappointed with the outcome of last week's election, thousands of Georgians have signed one of two online petitions on the White House's official website asking to peacefully withdraw from the United States.

"Peacefully grant the state of Georgia to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own new government," the petition reads.

If secession seems an extreme position, Georgia is apparently not alone. People in 20 states have signed similar petitions.

To be clear, the petitions do not have the weight of law. No matter how many people signed them, Georgia will not be leaving the union.

However, according to the White House's policy, petitions which garner 25-thousand signatures will receive an official response.
