DECATUR, Ga. -- The DeKalb School Board has called a special meeting Friday to discuss their superintendent.
In a statement Thursday evening the board says:
The DeKalb County Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson have mutually agreed to end their relationship effective Friday, February 8, 2013. The Board and Dr. Atkinson each determined and believe that it is in the best interest of all concerned that there be a mutual separation and they wish each other well in all their future endeavors.

According to an agenda sent out Thursday following a special called meeting, board members plan to meet Friday in executive session and then vote on a separation agreement with Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson.

Immediately after that they plan on voting to approve an employment agreement with an interim superintendent.
The meeting is set for 4p.m. Friday.
Atkinson is on bereavement leave, following the death of her father, so the Board wants to find someone to replace her temporarily.
Several candidates have been interviewed, including former State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurman.
The board met Wednesday, and despite orders from SACS and the state school board to work together, it took members more than an hour to vote for a new chairperson.
