Shane Demetrice Woods is wanted for murder

CANTON, Ga -- It has been two weeks since Sherry Garland said goodbye to her son Zach Rose as he walked out of the door to their Canton home. Zach Rose told his mother to watch over her grandson. That's what Zach called his pet Great Dane Mathias. Garland never saw her son alive again.

Garland spoke to 11 Alive News the first time she has gone public since her son's murder. It was difficult for her but she wanted to do it because a man wanted for her son's murder is still on the loose. "We need him off the street before somebody else's family is devastated, before another life is stolen," she said. "This is like the hardest thing ever."

Shane Demetrice Woods, 22, aka "Yung Slim ABG", is wanted by Alpharetta police and he is believed to be armed and dangerous. This isn't the first time Woods has been in trouble with the law.

DeKalb County Court records obtained by 11 Alive News show that Woods was charged with murder in October 2010 in connections with an armed robber/home invasion in Decatur. The case was dismissed in April 2012 and was never presented to a grand jury because of insufficient evidence.

Nine months later Woods is a suspect in the murder of Zachary Rose who was gunned down in the doorway of an Alpharetta condo on January 28th. A second suspect, Jarad Terel Owens, 22, was taken into custody shortly after the murder.

Garland said she can't figure out why her son succumbed to such violence. "I mean he was a good person," she said. "Anybody who knew him knew that and I don't know why anybody would want to hurt him."

Holding a picture of her son and supported by Zach's father John Garland and high school friend Jerad Bartlett, Sherry Garland fought through tears to ask for help. She wants to move on with her grief. "I just keep waiting for him to walk back in the door," she said. "I know he's not going to, but it just doesn't feel real yet."

Alpharetta police are offering a $1,000 reward if you can simply tell them where Shane Woods is.

A "Zach Rose Memorial Fund" has been set up to help the family pay for his funeral. Any extra money will go toward the reward fund.
