WINDER, Ga. -- A public school teacher is facing charges of providing drugs to a friend -- an 18-year-old woman.
The teen died the next day.
And the Barrow County Sheriff told 11Alive News that he is now looking for a second suspect in this drug transaction between the teacher and the teenager.
The teacher, Emily Smith, 37, worked at Winder-Barrow Middle School.
She taught sixth grade mathematics.
Sheriff Jud Smith said that Emily Smith, off campus, provided drugs to the 18 year old, one day last month.
And the next day the young woman died.
Sheriff Smith said the drugs were in the woman's system -- high levels of Methadone and Xanax.
According to the Sheriff, his investigators checked the girl's cell phone and found texts between her and Emily Smith from the day before, arranging for the sale of the drugs.
Smith was arrested this week on charges of criminal distribution of a controlled substance, use of a communication device to facilitate the sale of a controlled substance, and reckless conduct.
She's at home, now, on an $8,000 bond.
She did not answer the door Friday night when 11Alive News tried to contact her for comment.
A neighbor, Robyn Weiss, believes Smith was simply trying to provide medicine to her friend, and was not dealing drugs.
"Emily's got the biggest heart in the world," Weiss said. "She's a lovely, lovely person. And I honestly think she just did the wrong thing for the right reason.... There is no way on God's green earth that she would harm anyone knowingly.... I think she honestly was trying to help someone she knew, and it just went horribly wrong."
The Barrow County School Superintendent, Wanda Creel, said that as of late Thursday afternoon, Smith is no longer employed by the school system.
