GWINNETT COUNTY -- Police say a park ranger was shot Wednesday evening at Buford Dam Park.
Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said the shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. at the Lower Overlook area of Buford Dam Park in Gwinnett County. Cpl. Smith said the wounded ranger made his way on foot to a main park road where passersby called 911.
The ranger was able to give a statement to the responding officers before he was transported to a local hospital. He said he had approached the suspect to tell her the park was closed. The victim described the suspect as an adult black female occupying a pickup truck.
Officers checked the park area and found a person matching the ranger's description of the suspect dead inside a nearby vehicle. Detectives say the woman committed suicide.
The ranger has undergone surgery but no condition report is available. The name of the deceased woman has not been released.
