Boating accident results in death at Allatoona Lake

BARTOW COUNTY -- Robert Lewis, of Dallas, Ga., has died due to a boating accident at Allatoona Lake. 

Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials responded to an emergency call of a report indicating a person in the water who was hit by a boat around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Lewis was removed from the water by rescue personnel and citizen assistance. He was not wearing a life jacket. He was then transported by Bartow EMS.

The bass boat was found at full throttle without an operator and was circling. DNR Rangers and emergency personnel cleared out the area to avoid the unmanned boat hitting another vessel or person. The unmanned boat ran for over 15 minutes until it ran out of gas.

The DNR Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is in the process of reconstructing the accident with the boat, which is in possession of DNR.
