Cherokee Co. School Board member, two others, charged with lying to police

CANTON -- The Canton Police Department obtained arrest warrants for three people, charging them with filing a false police report and providing false statements to the detectives.

Two of the people turned themselves in.

On Saturday morning, Kelly Marlow, a Cherokee County School Board member, and Robert Trim, a political advisor, turned themselves in to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center at approximately 8:00. Both were released on bond.

The third person, Barbara Knowles, the Secretary of the Cherokee County Republican Party, had yet to surrender as of Saturday evening.

On June 13, Knowles called 911 and filed a police report with the Canton Police Department claiming that she along with Marlow and Trim had almost been struck by a vehicle while crossing the street outside of the crosswalk area.

Knowles indicated that the vehicle that had almost struck them was a white BMW being driven by Cherokee County School Superintendent Frank Petruzielo.

Kelly Marlow has been feuding with Petruzielo and fellow school board members for months.  The June 13th school board meeting was particularly heated.  Minutes later, according to the three, Petruzielo sped past them in a manner they considered threatening.

"The superintendent of the schools raced right by me in his white BMW," Knowles said to the Canton 911 operator, "and did not, did not stop.  Nothing."

Moments later during the call, the operator asks, "Okay, and so he sped by you?"

"I was crossing the street and he sped up and went right by me."

Petruzielo has denied it, and police investigators determined that Knowles, Marlow and Trim lied to investigators when they said Petruzielo drove at them in a threatening manner.

On July 5, detectives secured arrests warrants for Knowles, Marlow, and Trim. Knowles was charged with filing the false police report, which is a misdemeanor, as well as making false statements to detectives, a felony. Marlow was charged with making false statements to detectives, a felony. Trim was charged with making false statements to detectives, a felony.

Knowles would not comment when contacted by 11Alive News.  Instead she referred 11Alive News to her attorney, Anthony Morgese.

"We'll defend this case in court," Morgese said, "we look forward to defending it."

11Alive News is attempting to contact Marlow and Trim for comment.
