Freddie Freeman earns spot on NL All-Star roster

ATLANTA -- Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has been voted in by the fans to the final sport on the National League's roster in Tuesday's All-Star Game. 

This is Freeman's first All-Star selection. 

Fans could make their player selections a number of ways, whether it was online at MLB.com, by texts or by tweets. As long it was before 4 p.m. EDT on Thursday afternoon, it counted.

In all, just a little more than 79 million fans casted their votes for the final two spots in the Midsummer Classic. The total number of votes surpassed the previous mark of 68.6 million, which was set in 2009.

Nearly 20 million of those votes came from Freeman and Braves fans.

For the final six-hours fans could place their votes via Twitter, as every tweet with a player designated hashtag counted as a vote. More than 4,200 tweets per minute were recorded at one point with another 24,000 twitter votes coming in at 3:59 p.m. EDT.

#VoteFreddie, Freeman's designated hashtag, was the overall leading Twitter vote-getter. 

Freeman is batting .307 with nine homers and 56 RBIs heading into Atlanta's game against Cincinnati on Thursday night.

The American League vote went to Steve Delabar, of the Toronto Blue Jays. The relief pitcher won with 9.6 million votes. He is 5-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 37 appearances for the Blue Jays.
