ATLANTA -- The George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict has sparked countless kitchen table conversations across the country about self-defense, the criminal justice system and race.
But nowhere have those conversations been more pointed than in African-American households where parents and children alike are grappling with what lessons young black teens can learn from the tragedy of Trayvon Martin's death.
For mother Toni Batiste, those conversations can be summed up in a single word: survival.
"You've got to make it home," Batiste says she explains to her children. "And trust that your mom and dad will deal whatever -- or whomever -- may be following you."
11Alive News spoke with a panel of a half dozen African-American parents, teenagers and educators to get their perspective on the controversial case and its implications for their everyday lives.
