Calvin Battle, 26, charged with cruelty to animals
TUCKER, Ga. -- Some disturbing pictures from inside the DeKalb County animal shelter show an employee of a private company that runs the shelter beating and kicking a dog.
DeKalb County Police have arrested Calvin Battle, 26, an employee of Lifeline Animal Project, and charged him with misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals.
Lifeline took over operations of the shelter on July 1, 2013 to try to turn around the dilapidated facility. Less than a month later one of the private company's employees was arrested.
Surveillance video from inside the shelter showed Battle beating a dog inside one of the kennels with a metal feed bowl. A short time later he went back into the cage and the video showed him kicking the dog.
After seeing the video Lifeline Executive Director Rebecca Guinn said Battle will be terminated. "We have a zero tolerance policy for any kind of mistreatment of the animals and we were mortified by this," she said.
Guinn said Battle cleared a background check and a reference check before he was hired. He has been with the company since they took over the shelter.
There were three dogs in the kennel where the incident happened. All three dogs were taken to a veterinarian for observation. "And if there's any additional injuries that are discovered on those animals then there's potential to increase these charges," DeKalb Police Spokesperson Mekka Parish said.
DeKalb Police said they are trying to find out if this was the only incident involving Battle at the shelter.
