ATLANTA -- It's just a normal part of dining out. After enjoying the meal, most of us don't leave the table without leaving a tip.
But according to The Wall Street Journal, some restaurants in New York and Chicago are considering taking the tip off the table altogether, making theirs a tip-free establishment.
Those restaurants would instead bump menu prices by as much as 15 percent. So rather than working for tips, waiters and waitresses would earn higher hourly pay.
So far, it seems the trend hasn't spread to the south. But would Atlanta restaurants get behind the practice?
Restaurant owner Doug Caylor says it depends on the establishment.
"I think for higher-end restaurants, it's a good idea. For middle to lower-end establishments, I don't think it will work as well."
Caylor's restaurant, Drafting Table Pub, is less than a year old. He fears raising prices for such a practice would drive away his customer base.
"For lower-end restaurants, I believe it will stand out more because your prices will raise more."
Caitlin Bradley only works a six-hour shift at Drafting Pub, but says on an average to good night, she will pull $100 to $150.
"On a great night, a little over $200," she said.
She says doing away with tips could be a gamble and might be difficult for small businesses.
"I know people who've worked at restaurants where you're leaving with close to $400 a night. And I don't know if you can pay someone enough hourly for a six-hour shift [to match that]."
