Falcons fall short on Sunday Night Football, lose to Patriots 30-23

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons were unable to complete a furious fourth quarter comeback and in the process, fell to the New England Patriots 30-23 on Sunday Night Football. 

Atlanta falls to 1-3 on the season, while New England improves to 4-0.

The Falcons scored first with a 23-yard field goal. Just after the start of the second quarter, Tom Brady hit backup tight end Matthew Mulligan for a 1-yard touchdown pass. 

With 38 seconds left in the half, Tony Gonzalez had Falcons fans praising his decision NOT to retire. He went 21 yards for a touchdown to even the score 10-10 at halftime.

The late game didn't put off early tailgaters. The smell of grill smoke filled the air around the Georgia Dome by lunchtime. Barbeque grills, satellite televisions, and Falcons banners marked a group of fans confident the Falcons could end the Patriots' winning streak.

The Falcons told the 11Alive Sports Team running back Steven Jackson won't play due to a hamstring injury. According to the official injury report, four other players are listed as questionable: Sam Baker , Julio Jones, Asante Samuel, and Roddy White.

The Patriots will have to wait at least one more week for the return of wide receiver Danny Amendola and the debut of tight end Rob Gronkowski. Both players were originally listed as questionable, but ruled out when the team traveled to Atlanta without them. The Patriots have won three games without them, but  Julian Edleman has more than ten catches from Tom Brady (he has 27 catches and 201 yards).

Jim Carey in town for filming Dumber and Dumber To is at the game. The Atlanta Falcons retweeted a photo from the crew at Sunday Night Football on NBC.

The match up includes a battle of two strong quarterbacks: Tom Brady and Matt Ryan. Who do you think will have better numbers today?
