WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. John Lewis was arrested on Tuesday during a march to the Capitol for immigration reform. This is Lewis' 45th arrest.
Lewis, along with other members of Congress, including Nancy Pelosi were arrested around 4:15 p.m. in front of the U.S. Capitol during the Camino Americano: Rally and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect.
The rally began around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning and featured speakers like civil rights leader Julian Bond, singer Lila Downs and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
Previously, Lewis had been arrested four times in Washington D.C. According to Brenda Jones, spokesperson for John Lewis, he was arrested twice at the Embassy of South Africa to protest apartheid and twice in front of the Embassy of the Sudan to protest genocide. Lewis' arrest on Tuesday marks his fifth arrest in Washington, D.C.
The Camino Americano Rally was held on the National Mall.
