CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- School children are grieving, a neighborhood is on edge, and police are asking for help finding a teen's killer.
It was on Tuesday when a 15 year old boy was found shot to death in Clayton County, at an old golf course behind a neighborhood on Inverness Trace.
He was a student at Mundy's Mill Middle School -- police are not releasing his name.
They've stepped up patrols, they're seeking tips from the public -- and students are anxious for information about the killer of their their classmate.
"A lot of people are very sad about what happened," said one student, Merah Nichols, Thursday night, "and it's a very emotional thing going on here, because he was a part of Mundy's Mill Middle, so he was in our family."
"It was a tragic situation," said another student, Tyrik Wynn. "He was in my Social Studies class, he used to laugh and everything.... I just want his memory to stay alive, and I just want him to rest in peace."
One officer close to the case told 11Alive News Thursday that he believes investigators are close to an arrest, but he said they still need the public's help with tips and possible evidence.
Another officer, Phong Nguyen, the spokesman for the Clayton County Police Department, said investigators have received several good leads from the public. "However, we're still asking the community to assist us if they have anything.... If they've heard anything suspicious, if they know anything, please come forth and tell us and just call us at the Clayton County Police Department.... We want to tell the community that we're definitely trying to find a resolution for this, and we are diligently working on this case. We do have officers in the location, so we don't want people to feel like their life is in jeopardy or anything. We do have officers out there and we are knocking on doors and trying to get information as much as we can."
The teen's body was discovered at around 6 p.m. Tuesday at the old Country Greens Golf Course, near the intersection of Tee Trace and Inverness Trace in Riverdale.
Officer Nguyen said the body was found on a golf cart path in some woods.
