The rain is still coming down. Many rivers, creeks and streams are already flowing over their banks. A flood watch continues for all of metro Atlanta and north Georgia. There are some flood warnings for some of those areas where creeks and streams can no longer hold all of the water that is running off into them.
The picture shows a hydrograph of Big Creek in Alpharetta. Look at the sharp rise in the water level this morning as the heavy rain moved in. Big Creek is above flood stage and is continuing to rise. It is expected to stay in the "minor flooding" category. Big Creek in Cumming is also in "minor flood."
The Etowah River in the Canton area is above flood stage.
The Euharlee Creek in Rockmart is above flood stage.
The Tallapoosa River in west Georgia is above flood stage.
The Coahulla near Dalton is above flood stage.
The Conasauga River near Eton in northwest Georgia is above flood stage.
All of the above rivers are are experiencing minor flooding. More rain is coming in tonight into Monday morning. These creeks and streams will continue to rise with more water running off into them. All are forecast to stay below "moderate" flooding criteria.
There are other rivers, creeks and streams that are near flood stage. We will be watching all of these for any additional warnings that may be issued.
The NWS has also issued what is called "areal" flood warnings for many areas. These "areal" flood warnings aren't for a specific creek or stream, but for any flood prone areas in the county that can't handle all of the water piling up. Those "areal" flood warnings are in effect for Gordon, Floyd, Cherokee, Cobb, Gilmer, Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin and Haralson counties.
