Clerk robbed at Subway in Hampton
HAMPTON, Ga -- Minutes must have seemed like hours for a Hampton store clerk who was robbed by two armed masked men December 5, 2013. Henry County Police released surveillance video of the robbery because one of the suspects made a mistake.
Mark L. didn't want his last name publicized but gave 11 Alive News a firsthand account of what happened. He was the clerk who faced the barrel of a gun while the suspects cleaned out a cash drawer.
The clerk said the suspects waited to enter the Subway, where he has worked for six years, until he was alone. "I actually just finished up with a family just before they came in," he said.
He said he tried to remain calm and cooperate with the robbers while they took cash out of the register and out of his pockets. He said he was hoping they would get what they wanted and leave as soon as possible. I was afraid I might have another family or somebody else show up because usually I get kind of busy around that time," the clerk said. "I was afraid things could get real ugly if another customer showed up."
The clerk said the suspects threatened to shoot him if he didn't cooperate as they led him into a back officer. They tried to make him open the safe but the clerk didn't know how.
Police said the suspects seemed to know their way around the business. "From my experience these individuals may have done this in the past," said Sgt. Joey Smith. "They're very confident and they're very scary."
The two suspects, who wore masks, were in the Subway only minutes but long enough for one of them to make a mistake. He pulled his mask down for a few seconds, enough time to be seen on camera. "It did expose very good facial features and we're hoping that someone will identify him," Sgt. Smith said.
The clerk was back at work the next day refusing to give into fears that it would happen again. "The day we let criminals knock us around, the day we let them make us afraid, is really the only time they actually win," he said.
