Eric Chepkuto, 37, of Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Eric Chepkuto came to America from Kenya in 1998 to get a degree and earn a living to support his family here and back in Kenya. Just when his life was looking up, he was murdered in his Sandy Springs apartment.

His murder didn't receive any news media attention when it happened. But it has sent shock waves across continents as a high profile case in Kenya.

Chepkuto recently graduated from Kennesaw State University. His wife said he planned to go back to Kenya to visit his mother in April. Instead she had to ship his body to Kenya to be buried. "It's been ten years since his mother has seen him and now I have to send him back to her in a box," his wife said. "And that's what really haunts me so bad."

She didn't want to be identified because she is afraid. Chepkuto's killer has not been caught.

His wife last saw him at around 10-PM on December 27, 2013 when she went to work. She came home the next morning to their apartment at around 8-AM. "The wife arrived home and found her husband face down in the bedroom," said Sgt. Ron Momon of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Police said Chepkuto was shot in the mouth. "It was horrifying," his wife said. "I didn't know what to think."

Although it has been over three weeks since he was killed, Chepkuto's wife said she still has a hard time realizing he's gone. "The other day I was expecting him to come home around 6:30 or something, because that's when he usually came home," she said. "It was just, so heart breaking."

While Chepkuto's death has received little news coverage here, that is not the case in his native Kenya. The case has been high profile and family members are calling on the Kenyan government to investigate his death.

"Whoever did this, they hurt a lot of people," Chepkuto's wife said. "They didn't just murder my husband, they murdered me, they murdered his mother, his father and all the thousands that loved him."

Sandy Springs Police say it appears that whoever murdered Chepkuto may have known him because there were no signs of forced entry at his apartment. "Detectives are still interviewing a number of people connected to the couple and awaiting results from forensic tests on evidence taken from the scene," said Capt. Steve Rose.

"I pray every night and day since this happened that God will bless the detectives in bringing the perpetrator to justice," Chepkuto's wife said.
