ATLANTA -- US Representative and US Senate candidate Paul Broun (R-10 District) sent out a campaign email on Friday promising to give away a semi-automatic weapon to a lucky supporter.
The note asks a simple question of Broun's supporters: "How would you like to start off 2014 with a brand new AR-15 for free?"
The email points out that Broun is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment and that as one of the "most conservative members of Congress," he is constantly under attack for his ideals. The letter also states that President Barack Obama would "like nothing more than to ban the AR-15 rifle."
Broun also insists in the email that "Democrats and liberal media would love to take away our guns and mandate every aspect of our lives."
In order to enter the drawing, supporters need only provide their name, email address and zip code prior to the Thursday, February 27 deadline at Broun's campaign website. The giveaway's rules say US citizens and legal residents 18 years of age and older are eligible to enter.
The rules page states that there will be a random drawing from all the valid entries received for a single grand prize of an AR-15. The estimated prize value of the rifle is $1,300.
This is not the first time that Broun has stepped into controversy. In September 2012, when speaking to a group at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Ga., he referred to evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory of the universe's creation as "lies straight from the pit of hell."
Last September, Broun was named to a list of "most corrupt members of Congress" by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which cited a "failure to disclose the true source and terms of his campaign loans."
