DACULA, Ga. -- A Dacula city council member was arrested Friday and charged with using a city credit card for personal expenses.
According to Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter, Greg Reeves is accused of illegally charging $3,600 on his city credit card. Porter said that he got a tip about three weeks ago that for at least four months, Reeves had been renting a car with the city credit card and then using that car to deliver pizzas. Reeves makes his living delivering pizzas.
"There was no attempt to hide this," Porter said. "I mean, there were several people in Dacula who knew about it. The city administrator as well as the mayor knew that he was doing this and it just went on."
Reeves was arrested on Friday afternoon and charged with theft by taking -- a felony.
Porter said that while it's troubling that others apparently knew about Reeves' alleged misuse of city funds, that's not a chargeable offense in this case
Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said that he tried to get Reeves to pay the bill, but the balance kept increasing instead of decreasing. The mayor said that the city has not paid Reeves' bill and does not intend to pay it. Wilbanks said Reeves will somehow have to settle it.
Porter expects to take the case to a grand jury within the month.
As of Friday night, Reeves remained behind bars at the Gwinnett County Jail. His bond was set at $11,200.
