(WXIA) -- Friday marks the sixth annual National Dress in Blue Day, which is geared toward bringing attention to colon cancer and to celebrate the courage of those affected by the disease.
The day was created in 2009 by the Colon Cancer Alliance to bring national attention to colon cancer. By "going blue" they hope that the public's awareness will be raised and that people will learn the facts about colon cancer, and how to reduce their risk of contracting the disease.
Similar to the pink ribbon noting breast cancer awareness, a blue star signifies the memory of those lost to the disease and the hope for a future without colon cancer.
