ATLANTA -- A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10am Friday for northeast Georgia. We've had a few reports of sleet mixing in with some of this rain in north Georgia as the rain moved in. Temperatures are above freezing at the surface, so it is melting when it hits the ground. This has mainly been a cold rain during the evening hours.
Counties in the advisory until 10 a.m. Friday include: Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Towns, Union and White.
As more of this cold air comes in from the northeast at the same time moisture pushes in from the southwest, there is a chance for some sleet or snow to mix in in northeast Georgia. The potential exists for some accumulating snow in parts of the north Georgia mountains from this evening through Friday morning.
Widespread 1-2 inches may occur in portions of northeast Georgia, with 2-3 inches in elevations above 2,500 feet. Those 2-3 inch totals will be rare.
There is still great uncertainty with this system. We continue to watch monitor the rain and temperatures overnight. Some of the models are predicting all cold rain for north Georgia. Others show the potential for a winter mix.
