President Obama delivers State of Union to divided Congress

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 13 Februari 2013 | 15.20

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is urging a divided Congress to boost job creation and strengthen the middle class through a package of government-backed proposals.

In his State of the Union address, Obama is calling for increasing the federal minimum wage, spending more to fix the nation's roads and bridges, and expanding early childhood education.

The president is also pledging to cut the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan in half within a year.

Obama says his proposals would not increase the deficit "by a single dime." But with unemployment persistently high and consumer confidence falling, he is pressing a progressive case for Washington's role in reigniting the economy.

President Barack Obama's State of the Union address is producing fleeting moments of bipartisanship in a divided Congress.

After Obama slowly walked down the center aisle, he made a special effort to talk to Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, who only returned to Washington last month after suffering a massive stroke.

Republicans are responding to Obama's State of the Union address with fresh appeals to voters on the economy and promises to rein in federal spending with a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says in the Republican address that Obama should "abandon his obsession with raising taxes."

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman says Obama is promoting "the same big-government policies that have failed to get our economy up and running again."

The official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing says the body was found at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday

Authorities said earlier they believed the man in the cabin was Christopher Dorner. He has been on the run since they say he launched a campaign to exact revenge against the Los Angeles Police Department for his firing.

Officials will be looking for identifying marks such as tattoos before confirming the identity.

Police say Dorner killed four people on Tuesday. On deputy was hit by gunfire was killed in the incident. A second deputy was taken into surgery after being shot, and is expected to survive.

Mother cries for help finding son's alleged killer

Shane Demetrice Woods is wanted for murder

CANTON, Ga -- It has been two weeks since Sherry Garland said goodbye to her son Zach Rose as he walked out of the door to their Canton home. Zach Rose told his mother to watch over her grandson. That's what Zach called his pet Great Dane Mathias. Garland never saw her son alive again.

Garland spoke to 11 Alive News the first time she has gone public since her son's murder. It was difficult for her but she wanted to do it because a man wanted for her son's murder is still on the loose. "We need him off the street before somebody else's family is devastated, before another life is stolen," she said. "This is like the hardest thing ever."

Shane Demetrice Woods, 22, aka "Yung Slim ABG", is wanted by Alpharetta police and he is believed to be armed and dangerous. This isn't the first time Woods has been in trouble with the law.

DeKalb County Court records obtained by 11 Alive News show that Woods was charged with murder in October 2010 in connections with an armed robber/home invasion in Decatur. The case was dismissed in April 2012 and was never presented to a grand jury because of insufficient evidence.

Nine months later Woods is a suspect in the murder of Zachary Rose who was gunned down in the doorway of an Alpharetta condo on January 28th. A second suspect, Jarad Terel Owens, 22, was taken into custody shortly after the murder.

Garland said she can't figure out why her son succumbed to such violence. "I mean he was a good person," she said. "Anybody who knew him knew that and I don't know why anybody would want to hurt him."

Holding a picture of her son and supported by Zach's father John Garland and high school friend Jerad Bartlett, Sherry Garland fought through tears to ask for help. She wants to move on with her grief. "I just keep waiting for him to walk back in the door," she said. "I know he's not going to, but it just doesn't feel real yet."

Alpharetta police are offering a $1,000 reward if you can simply tell them where Shane Woods is.

A "Zach Rose Memorial Fund" has been set up to help the family pay for his funeral. Any extra money will go toward the reward fund.

Flood watch until 1 p.m. Wednesday

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 12 Februari 2013 | 15.20

ATLANTA -- The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a flood watch now in effect for portions of north and most of central Georgia, mainly along and south of a Cedartown to Alpharetta to Athens line.

This goes through 1p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

* Moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall will continue to spread
across parts of north and most of central Georgia through early
Wednesday. Since Sunday afternoon between one and three
inches of rainfall has already fallen across much of the area.
An additional 2 to 4 inches is possible across the watch area
through Wednesday morning. Locally higher amounts are likely as
showers continue to train across the same areas.

* Recent rainfall has made the soil very moist and the
additional rainfall amounts could lead to flooding along
rivers, small streams and creeks. Also storm drains and
ditches may become clogged causing additional street
flooding especially along low lying flood prone areas.

Overweight man makes huge health change

ATLANTA -- After watching his weight climb to 450 pounds, Carlos Auger, Jr. is motivated by a need to make serious changes.

"I'm huge. I can't believe it," Auger says.

A few weeks into a nine-week fitness and lifestyle program at the Jewish Community Center, for this child at heart, he has a simple but important goal:

"To fit into a rollercoaster," Auger said. "I love rollercoasters. I haven't been on a rollercoaster for 10 years because I can't fit."

The 38-year-old Lilburn resident also has a good sense of humor about the challenges he encounters because of his weight.

"I just want to fit into a Waffle House booth. I mean I get into one of those and it's like I need butter to get out," Auger joked.

But the newlywed is also focused on making a big change after a recent doctor's visit.

"He goes, you're fine now, but in a year or two it's going to catch up," Auger said. "I don't want to die. I'm 38. I've got a lot to look forward to."

He also worries about his parents who have been worried about him for decades.

"I don't want my parents to bury their son," Auger said.

His dad, Carlos Auger, chokes up when he thinks about his son making the commitment to a healthy life.

"That's the best thing he's ever done in his life for me. "

Laura Johnson is the certified personal trainer leading the local program modeled after the NBC reality show, the Biggest Loser.

"It's hard to recondition the body physically and emotionally," Johnson said. "He's made all of the workouts. He's sticking to his plan, now it's just managing his portions."

Auger says he's now able to push away from a plate without finishing everything on it. And he's focused on making slow, but steady progress.

"I'm shooting right now for 449. Tomorrow, 448. I'm going very slow," Auger said.

Auger is one of 30 participants in the Marcus Jewish Community Center's program, The Biggest Loser Challenge. For more information on the fitness and lifestyle program, contact the JCC's fitness department.

Birthday surprise: A stack of paper inside new Ipad box

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 11 Februari 2013 | 15.20

Morrow, Ga. -- Imagine you've pitched in with your family to buy your mom a $500 Ipad. You've all gotten together to present it to her at the birthday party, and she's excited to see the box. Then she opens it-and finds nothing more than a stack of paper inside. A family in Morrow said that's what happened to them Saturday night.

"She's worth more than an Ipad, definitely worth more than a ream of paper," Chalae Hawkins said about seeing the paper in the box. "And when she opened it all of those happy feelings turned from pain, to hurt, to embarrassment."

They bought the gift at Target using a credit card. They even overnighted a special case to arrive on time for the party. But when the shrink wrap came off, they said all that was inside was a stack of printer paper. They went back to Target, but said the manager referred them to corporate headquarters. Someone on the phone there told them to call back Monday. They were not happy.

"I was just concerned for my daughter, because I could see the look in her face, and I knew that they were devastated," said birthday girl Diane Ford. "I'm glad I wasn't there at the Target with them, because we all might have gone to jail."

Then they searched online. It turns out this could possibly be a scam that's being seen more and more often all over the world. The family isn't being ripped off by any store-it's possible the store is being ripped off by a scammer.

The scam involves someone buying the Ipad and then replacing it with paper or another object of similar weight to an Ipad. Then the box is re-shrink wrapped and returned to the store, where's it's accidentally re-shelved and resold. Sometimes the scammers hire people off of Craigslist to return the item for them.

Target told 11Alive News they will investigate to see if Hawkins' Ipad was part of a fraudulent exchange. Hawkins is still hoping to give her mom a new Ipad, but she knows she won't be able to get back the surprise of the party.

"We lost the sentimental side of her getting this gift," Hawkins said. "We can't get that back."

The Grammys: More than just awards

Gotye and Kimbra accept the award for record of the year, presented by Prince. (Photo: JOE KLAMAR AFP/Getty Images)

(CNN) -- Sunday night's 55th annual Grammy Awards kicked off swiftly: Taylor Swift that is.

The popular singer took to the stage dressed as a ringmaster and surrounded by circus/canival types as she sang her hit "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

"I'm sorry. I'm busy opening up the Grammys, and we are never getting back together," Swift said, changing her lyrics to fit the evening.

The night was as much about those who took to the stage to entertain as it was about who won trophies.

There were plenty of duets: British artist Ed Sheeran was joined by fellow countryman Sir Elton John for a duet of the former's hit song "The A Team," nominated for song of the year. R&B crooner Miguel who was joined by rapper Wiz Khalifa for a rendition of "Adorn." Miranda Lambert was joined by fellow country artist Dierks Bentley for a performance of their hits "Over You" and "Home." Maroon 5 was joined by Alicia Keys for performances of "Daylight" and "Girl on Fire" respectively.

Fun. performed "Carry On" and won a big one for the night: song of the year for their hit "We Are Young." Mumford & Sons offered a rousing rendition of their song "I Will Wait."

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres made singer Beyonce laugh during their introduction of Justin Timberlake, who returned to the stage after a four-year absence from the music scene.

The Grammys went sepia-toned for Timberlake's performance of his new single "Suit and Tie," which offered plenty of homage to the Rat Pack era with Timberlake in a tux with a bow-tie and a big band and similarly suited backup singers billed as "JT and the Tennessee Kids."

The first award of the night, best pop solo performance, went to Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain."

"We work so hard; we make it look so easy," Adele said in sending "big love" to the other nominees.

Jennifer Lopez presented the first award to Adele, with co-presenter rapper Pit Bull, and joked about the Grammys' reported memo asking stars to cover up.

"As you can see I read the memo," Lopez joked, wearing a black dress cut extremely high and fully exposing one leg.

Frank Ocean beat out Miguel and Chris Brown for best urban contemporary album for his "Channel Orange," and Kelly Clarkson stopped to hug -- and got stuck to via their dress beading -- Lambert after winning for best pop album.

"Miguel, I don't know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together," Clarkson said, complimenting that singer on his Grammy performance.

Host LL Cool J referenced last year's tragedy of the death of singer Whitney Houston the night before the Grammys before launching into some remarks about the importance of the award to the various performers. While they came from different parts of the world and different genres, the artists shared the same desire to make it in the industry, LL Cool J reflected.

"Cause when you get right down to it a Grammy isn't just a shiny trophy to hold on to," he said. "A Grammy is a dream come true."

It was expected to be a bit of a boys' club on CBS Sunday with a six-way tie among Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean, Fun., Kanye West, Jay-Z and the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach for lead nominee, as each received six nods apiece.

In keeping with the "guys night" theme, much of the Grammys occurs pre-show and some of those who won before the ceremony even aired included Skrillex, who snagged awards for dance recording, dance/electronica album and remixed recording non-classical; the Black Keys, who won rock song and rock album. The group's Dan Auerbach was named producer of the year, non-classical.

This year's Grammy awards ceremony had plenty of news leading up to it, with much of it involving singer Chris Brown.

The days leading up to Sunday's ceremony found Brown being investigated for an alleged brawl that resulted in Grammy nominee Ocean later saying he was declining to press charges or file a civil suit.

On Feb. 6 Brown was in court as a prosecutor asked a judge to order the singer to restart the community labor portion of his service tied to his probation for assaulting Rihanna. Friday marked the fourth anniversary of that assault, which occurred before that year's Grammy ceremony. Rihanna was in court with Brown this time around as the pair further fueled chatter surrounding their renewed "friendship."

The pair have been a huge focus of this year's Grammys as fans waited to see if they would arrive at the ceremony together and how much "togethernes" they would exhibit.

On Saturday Brown totaled his Porshe after his representative said he was "ruthlessly pursued by paparazzi" on his way to a Symphonic Love Foundation event in Los Angeles.

Hundreds wait for city to buy their guns

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 10 Februari 2013 | 15.20

College Park, Ga. - The City of College Park spent $20,000 Saturday to buy and destroy several hundred guns in a buyback program. Hundreds of people lined up for hours to wait. Some said they came out for the cash, others to send a message.

"I don't really care what your motivation is," said College Park Police Chief Ronald Fears. "But I think one less gun in the home the better."

There was also a perfect example of the free market in action. About a dozen gun collectors showed up to work the long line to try to buy guns before the city did-often for a higher price.

"We're coming down here to make sure that some nice antiques don't get destroyed," Frank Poole of Franklin County said. "I've seen guns come through here today that were 150 years old and some that were brand new."

A private sale on the sidewalk is a perfectly legal transaction in Georgia, no background checks required. Poole said in most cases he couldn't understand why people would give up their only mode of personal protection, but he said he did respect their motivation.

"One of the gentlemen I talked to today said, 'I'm bringing this because I've got a child in the house and I don't want him to injure himself,' You can't argue with that, that's just being practical," Poole said.

With more than 300 million guns in the US, Chief Fears said it will take more than a few buybacks to make an impact. But he said different approaches should be on the table.

"I don't think taking the guns in gun buybacks is the only answer, I think there are a lot of things you'll have to do to make the homes safer, to make the streets safer," Fears said.

"But this is a start-this is a step in the right direction."
