Hundreds of students stuck at school for the night

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 29 Januari 2014 | 15.21

Children across the metro are having to spend the night in school as school buses couldn't drive on the roads.

Students in Marietta, Cherokee County, Atlanta and Paulding County were some of the ones who had to stay sheltered in their schools.

About 500 students in Paulding County were stuck at the elementary, middle and high schools.

About 1,300 Douglas County students are sheltering in place.  Other people driving in Douglas County and got stuck on the roads walked to the schools and are spending the night there.

According to the Cherokee County schools, roads are too bad to continue to send children home.

School spokesperson Carrie McGowan issued the following statement:

Due to buses being stranded by weather, traffic or impassible roads, the Superintendent has authorized the Transportation Department to temporarily suspend bus services-Until our roads are made safer, it isn't prudent to continue to put students on buses at this time. Students who are at school will remain there safely; a parent or guardian can pick their child up if they are able to travel. Schools will be in direct communication with parents of those students still in their care and are prepared to shelter students as necessary this evening. School buses currently in service on a route will be attempting to complete those routes and deliver students.

State of emergency has drivers stranded and roads a mess

ATLANTA -- Georgia Governor Nathan Deal says this winter storm was "unexpected".

In a late night news conference Tuesday, Gov. Deal, along with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and other state officials, discussed the level of preparedness for the storm and its aftermath.

Deal said Tuesday's storm "came unexpectedly," which caught the area off guard when it came to the amount of traffic stranded on the roads.  Deal said he was calling on the Georgia National Guard to help with the storm's aftermath.

Reed said he and his administration would "take responsibility" for what happened, saying that part of the problem was due to everyone leaving work and school at once.

The entire state of Georgia along with five other Southeastern states are under states of emergency after snow and ice hammered the region Tuesday.

As of 1 a.m. Georgia Power reported 1,200 customers in the dark statewide.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared the state of emergency late Tuesday afternoon, and was quickly joined by governors in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina making similar declarations.

As of 9 p.m., the Georgia State Patrol says they have been called out to investigate some 940 crashes since 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. The crashes have resulted in 104 injuries and one fatality.

That wreck happened just after 1 p.m. on Ga. Highway 85 at Seavy Streett in Senoia. A 1997 Ford Explorer being driven by 60 year-old Yvonne Nash of Griffin was traveling southbound on Georgia 85 when the vehicle lost control and overturned  into a ditch. Nash was pulled from the vehicle and transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Numerous roads throughout the state are temporarily unpassable, including Interstate Highway 75/85 (The Atlanta Downtown Connector) southbound at Fulton Street, Interstate Highway 20 westbound at the Connector, Interstate Highway 85 southbound in Gwinnett County at Hamilton Mill Road, numerous Interstate 75 entrance and exit ramps in Cobb County, north and southbound I-75 in Bartow County at State Route 20, Interstate Highway 575 northbound in Cherokee County at Cumming Highway, Interstate Highway 985 southbound in Hall County at State Route 129, Interstate 75 SB between mile markers 199 and 201 in Butts and Lamar Counties, SR 155 at SR 42 in Henry County, Interstate Highway 20 westbound in Richmond County, State Route 16 at the Spalding/Coweta counties line; State Route 141 north and southbound in Gwinnett County, State Route 9 north and southbound in Forsyth County, State Route 164 east and westbound in Banks County, State Route 120 eastbound in Haralson County, State Route 61 in Carroll County, State Route 36 near Nelson Drive in Upson County, State Route 49 at State Route 42 in Peach County, State Route 156 east and west bound in Gordon County, portions of State Routes 14, 38 and 92 in Fulton County. Crews are working at all locations.

The only roads officially closed for the duration at this time are the customary winter weather closings of State Route 180 Spur in Towns County and a portion of State Route 348 in White County.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Atlanta and areas north, south and east of the city. The warning was pushed much farther to the north after the snow moved much further north than originally forecast. The storm warning will be in effect through early Wednesday morning.

As of 8 p.m., the National Weather Service says the highest statewide snowfall amounts from Tuesday's storm are in Paulding and Cherokee Counties, where they said 3 1/2 inches had fallen.

STUDENTS STRANDED | Hundreds of students stuck at school

At 9:30 p.m., Interim DeKalb County CEO Lee May said he was issuing a state of emergency for that county, as many motorists were finding themselves stranded on the area's roads and highways.

Both AT&T and Verizon say high call volumes have caused problems with cell service across the metro.  Both say they aware of the problems and are working to expand coverage.

Most highways around metro Atlanta remain in various stages of gridlock, with motorists having been stranded for as long as seven hours over the course of the afternoon and early evening hours.

The City of Sandy Springs has opened the Hammond Park Gym -- located at 705 Hammond Drive -- to serve as a shelter for stranded motorists. The city says they are coordinating with the American Red Cross on efforts.

In Cherokee County, the First Baptist Church of Woodstock says they are opening their doors for stranded motorists who need to find somewhere for shelter against the weather.

The Marietta Public Schools announced Tuesday evening that students that have not been picked up are being housed at the school buildings, along with teachers and administrators. The students will be housed overnight if necessary, and kept until a parent or guardian can come and pick them up.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising tractor trailers to use chains while traveling on icy roadways in Georgia overnight. This is especially true in metro Atlanta and points to the west and southwest of the city. They said numerous trucks have lost traction on the highways and are stranded, causing severe delays.

City officials in Johns Creek said Morton Road between Jones Bridge and State Bridge roads is closed. They advise motorists to stay off of most roads in the area, including Old Alabama Road, Medlock Bridge Road, Kimball Bridge Road, State Bridge Road, Findley Road, Sargent Road, Jones Bridge Road, Johns Creek Parkway, McGinnis Ferry Road, Milton Road and Parsons Road.

Barnwell Road between Rivermont Parkway and Holcomb Bridge Road is closed due to icy conditions. In addition, Abbots Bridge Road in Johns Creek remains closed between Parsons Road and Station Run. They also report that Park Place at Newtown Park will be closed Wednesday.

GDOT says most interstate highways across the metro area remain gridlocked, and report numerous accidents around the region.

Other roadways have been closed or are experiencing severe delays across the metro area.

Sandy Springs Temple preps for cold weather by helping homeless

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 27 Januari 2014 | 15.21

11Alive News viewer J. Kelly Charles sent a photo of a frigid thermometer from Adairsville Monday evening.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- With colder weather on the way, a synagogue in Sandy Springs took a proactive approach to helping others stay warm.

After hymns and worship at Temple Sinai, members formed an assemble line of sorts as members manufactured 400 scarves and made 1000 sandwiches for the homeless in about an hour's time.

"For the men's division of the Union mission downtown," explained Rabbi Elana Perry

Rachel Katz is a little girl who knows what it feels like to be cold.

"You're not that happy and you just feel like you want to go inside and snuggle up in a blanket," she said.

When her dad asked if she wanted to help her church help the homeless she said yes.

"it makes me feel happy that they can finally get food," explained Katz.

"We know there is a great need in the community for food and articles of clothing, especially in this season," Perry said.

The plan was to put together 1000 sandwiches and 400 hundred sandwiches in a couple of hours but about 150 many people helping out it didn't take that long.

They're called the day Social Action Sunday at the synagogue, a monthly effort to lift spirit of those left out in the cold.

"It's really so heart warming to see so many people come out for this," Perry said.

Winter Storm Watch for areas S. & E. of Atlanta for Tue., Wed.

Ok. This is a weird one!  Chances for winter weather Tuesday are actually higher for areas SOUTH and EAST of Atlanta Tuesday into Wednesday.  Atlanta is not included in the watch, but areas south and east metro region are included.

The NWS has issued a winter storm watch for central and South Georgia. It's from late morning Tuesday into Wednesday.  Some of the counties in the south metro and east metro region are included in the watch. Here are the counties:

CLARKE-OCONEE-OGLETHORPE-WILKES-ROCKDALE-WALTON-NEWTON-MORGAN-GREENE-TALIAFERRO-HEARD-COWETA-FAYETTE-CLAYTON-SPALDING-HENRY-BUTTS-JASPER-PUTNAM-HANCOCK-WARREN-TROUP-MERIWETHER-PIKE-UPSON-LAMAR-MONROE-JONES-BALDWIN-WASHINGTON-GLASCOCK-JEFFERSON-HARRIS-TALBOT-TAYLOR-CRAWFORD-BIBB-TWIGGS-WILKINSON-MUSCOGEE-CHATTAHOOCHEE-MARION-SCHLEY-MACON-PEACH-HOUSTON-BLECKLEY-STEWART-WEBSTER-SUMTER-DOOLY-CRISP-PULASKI- INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...ATHENS...CONYERS...COVINGTON...NEWNAN... We have plenty of cold air spilling in again late Monday into Tuesday. At the same time, moisture from the Gulf starts pushing north into south and central georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday. That moisture will begin to change to sleet and snow in the watch area. Snow accumulations could max out at 2" with the possibility of ice in central and south Georgia.

The computer models are beginning to come together on this potential winter weather event.  The Weather Information Zone meteorologists are pouring over each new model when it comes in.  We will continue to fine tune this forecast and have updates on the impacts as it develops.

Daft Punk wins five Grammys, including album of the year

Daft Punk didn't have to stay up all night to get lucky.

The helmet-clad French pop duo won five Grammy Awards on Sunday night at the 56th annual Grammys. Their album Random Access Memories picked up three honors, for album of the year, best dance/electronica album and engineered album, and their single with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, Get Lucky, was named record of the year and best pop duo/group performance.

"On the behalf of the robots, I'd just like to say, man, thank you," Williams said, accepting for the silent Daft Punk twosome and drawing a laugh from the crowd when mentioning they wanted to thank their families.

"Honestly, I bet France is really proud of these guys right now," Williams said later in the night, accepting the award for record of the year.

Daft Punk collaborator and songwriter Paul Williams joked that "back when I was drinking, I would imagine things that weren't there and I'd get frightened. Then I got sober and two robots called and asked me to make an album."

She may never be a royal, but Lorde lorded over the ceremony, too. The 17-year-old New Zealander's hit Royals won both song of the year - making her the youngest artist ever to do so - and best pop solo performance.

"I probably wouldn't be here if Joel wasn't here," Lorde (real name: Ella Yelich O'Connor) said, accepting song of the year with co-writer Joel Little. "This guy nurtured me through my early years in songwriting."

Williams, who's up for seven awards total, won his first Grammy of the night for producer of the year.

Jay Z entered the night with a leading nine nominations, won best rap-sung collaboration with Justin Timberlake for Holy Grail and saved most of the love for wife Beyonce and their 2-year-old daughter: "I want to thank God, I mean, a little bit for this award but to all the universe for conspiring to put that beautiful light of a young lady in my life. And I want to tell Blue that Daddy got a gold sippy cup for you!"

Bruno Mars dedicated his pop vocal album Grammy - for Unorthodox Jukebox - to his mother, who died in June. "I hope you're smiling."

Nashville newcomer Kacey Musgrave won best country album for Same Trailer Different Park, "a record that I poured myself into and I was so proud of," said the singer.

Best country solo performance went to Darius Rucker's Wagon Wheel, while the Civil Wars' From This Valley won for best country duo/group performance. Musgraves' hit Merry Go 'Round was named best country song.

The best rock song category was conquered by the dream team of Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear with Cut Me Some Slack. Grohl said he called up McCartney to jam, and they knocked out the song in a few hours. "We wouldn't be here if it weren't for Paul and Ringo (Starr). To me that is what rock 'n' roll is all about."

Timberlake won two early Grammys: Suit & Tie was named best music video, and Pusher Love Girl was best R&B song. Alicia Keys' Girl on Fire was tops in the R&B album category, while best urban contemporary album went to Rihanna's Unapologetic.

Imagine Dragons' Radioactive won for best rock performance, God Is Dead? garnered Black Sabbath the metal performance award, Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampire of the City picked up the Grammy for alternative music album, and Clarity, by Zedd and featuring Foxes, topped the category for best dance recording.

History was also made by Led Zeppelin as the classic rock band won its first Grammy for best rock album with Celebration Day.

Her success so far early in her career? "It's been mental," Lorde said.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also took their first Grammys by storm. The hip-hop duo was named best new artist, and they also won three major rap awards: best performance and best song for Thrift Shop and best album for The Heist.

"Before there was any media, before there was any buzz, before there was a story, there was our fans," Macklemore said when accepting the award for best new artist. "Without them, there would be no us."
Macklemore & Lewis' The Heist is up for the top prize of the night - best album - against Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, m.A.A.D. City, Taylor Swift's Red and Sara Bareilles' Blessed Unrest.

Among other winners announced prior to the telecast, Michael Buble's To Be Loved won best traditional pop vocal album, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's Love Has Come for You was named best American roots song, and Ziggy Marley in Concert garnered best reggae album - sending Snoop Dogg to his 16th Grammy loss.

Draco Rosa's Vida took home best Latin pop album. Best spoken-word album went to comedian Stephen Colbert's America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't, and Kathy Griffin's Calm Down Gurrl was best comedy album.

Herb Alpert won best pop instrumental album for Steppin' Out, Laura Sullivan's Love's River was named best new age album, the Broadway show Kinky Boots received the award for best musical theater album, and the James Bond film Skyfall won both best score soundtrack and best song written for visual media for the Adele title track.

Mandisa's album Overcomer and its title track won the Grammys for contemporary Christian music album and contemporary Christian song, respectively, and Tye Tribbett received the honor for best gospel album for Greater Than (Live) as well as best gospel song for If He Did It Before... Same God (Live).

In jazz categories, saxophonist Wayne Shorter conquered the improvised solo category with Orbits, vocal album went to Gregory Porter's Liquid Spirit, Terri Lyne Carrington won instrumental album for Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, Night in Calisia was honored with the large ensemble award, and Paquito D'Rivera and Trio Corrente's Song for Maura won best Latin jazz album.

Three other Paul McCartney projects picked up Grammys: Wings Over America for best boxed set and Live Kisses for best music film and surround sound. There were also a pair of tied categories - Gipsy Kings' Savor Flamenco and Ladysmith Black Mambazo's Live: Singing for Peace Around the World split for best world music album, and the Rolling Stones' Charlie Is My Darling - Ireland 1965 and Bill Withers' The Complete Sussex and Columbia Albums were winners for historical album.

Victims of Maryland mall shooting identified

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 26 Januari 2014 | 15.21

COLUMBIA, Md. - A gunman opened fire in a crowded suburban shopping mall Saturday, leaving three people dead and setting off panic as hundreds of fear-stricken shoppers and mall employees raced for cover.

The suspect, armed with a shotgun, was among the victims at The Mall in Columbia, Howard County Police Chief Bill McMahon said. Police said a fourth victim was being treated for a gunshot wound to the foot. Four other people either suffered from medical conditions or suffered minor injuries such as twisted ankles, he said.

Brianna Benlolo, 21, of College Park, Md., and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Ellicott City, Md., were killed, police said. The identity of the gunman had not been released.

McMahon said the bodies were found in Zumiez, an apparel store catering to skaters, surfers and snowboarders, on the mall's upper level. Benlolo and Johnson were employees of the store, he said. The shooter's body was found still laden with ammunition, so McMahon said caution was being used.

He said he was "confident" there had been just one shooter. He said it wasn't clear whether the shooting was random or whether the shooter and victims knew each other.

McMahon said several calls came in to the 911 dispatcher around 11:15 a.m. about shots fired at the mall. Officers responded within two minutes, he said.

By late afternoon the mall had been cleared. The mall will remain closed at least until Sunday, police said.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said it has been a "tremendously trying" few hours for the community.

"We want to send our thoughts and prayers to the family members and the loved ones of the victims," Ulman said.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots, setting off a scramble as shoppers fled the mall or ran to hide.

Lauryn Stapleton, 18, who works at the Cartoon Cuts hair salon for children on the mall's second floor, said she witnessed the shooting near an escalator. She was getting food for her boss at the McDonald's, downstairs in the mall's food court, when she heard a loud sound from the level above.

"It sounded like somebody had dropped a brick off the top ledge and I heard someone say, 'Shots fired.' So I grabbed a kid and I looked - three people fell to the ground. I grabbed the kid and ran, had the mother follow me," Stapleton said.

"It was completely crazy - everybody started running and screaming" and Stapleton "almost passed out" from sheer hysteria, she said.

Standing in front of her mother's minivan, draped in a black hooded sweatshirt, she talked to reporters for several minutes, one of whom asked her what was going through her mind in the first moments after the shooting. Her answer? "Holy (expletive), I'm gonna die."

Tarah Lancaster-Williams and Tonya Broughton were at a mall spa for a "ladies' day out" when they saw people running.

"There was panic," Broughton said, a bit of the cream from her facial still flecked on her face. "I mean, if you can imagine just hearing those words, 'There's a shooter,' no one really thinks twice when they hear those words. You really start to flee. So we fled to the nearest store - and even in there you didn't know if someone was coming in there."

Broughton said the two, who had been sitting next to each other in the salon, moments later lost track of each other.

"As much as you think you've seen this on the news forever and you think, 'Here's what I'm going to do, I'm going to go this way,' that all goes out the window," Broughton said.

They both ended up in the mall's Victoria's Secret store, where Broughton said managers locked store gates. "They were extremely comforting and kept us updated. They were calm, and we just hugged each other and tried to talk to each other."

Hours later, Lancaster-Williams, clutching her cellphone and close to tears, stood in the cold parking lot wrapped in a white police blanket.

"We ran so fast - her coat is still in there, my purse, her purse is still in the mall, we don't know when we're going to get our belongings," she said. "But we're just thanking God that we're alive."

Ed Main was shopping at the Justice store with son Noah, 15, daughter Tori, 12, and niece Ana Collins, 18, when they heard two loud pops. He said they were hustled by an employee into a storeroom in the back of the store. Main, from nearby Westminster, said the employee "shut the door and barricaded it from the inside."

It was more than an hour before they were able to exit the mall.

The Mall tweeted this after the shooting: "Our hearts & prayers are with everyone in the Columbia community. The Mall in Columbia will remain closed for the remainder of the day."

Columbia, with a population of about 100,000 people, was built in the 1960s as a planned community of 10 "villages." Columbia is about 18 miles from Baltimore and 24 miles from Washington, D.C.

Activists march to protest abortion in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Many thousands of protesters from across California marched through downtown San Francisco on Saturday, calling for an end to abortion.

A massive and diverse crowd of protesters rallied in front of City Hall before marching down Market Street to Justin Herman Plaza for the 10th annual "Walk for Life West Coast." They chanted "Pro Life" and carried signs that read "Defend Life" and "Women deserve better than abortion."

On Wednesday, thousands of abortion protesters participated in the annual Walk for Life rally in Washington, D.C., to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized the procedure.

San Francisco police did not immediately provide an official crowd estimate, but at one point marchers stretched across more than a mile of Market Street, the liberal city's main thoroughfare.

High school senior Nancy Castellanos came to San Francisco on one of six buses of worshippers from St. Peter's Catholic Church in Dixon, about 70 miles away. She believes the laws need to change to make it harder to get an abortion.

"I am 100%, completely against abortion," Castellanos, 17, said. "If you don't want the child, there's always adoption."

John Paine, 52, arrived with people from his church group in Visalia in California's Central Valley, after making a 3.5-hour drive to San Francisco on Saturday.

"I'm ashamed that my country sanctions the killing of the most defenseless of its citizens," Paine said. "Human life in all its stages is sacred and should be protected."

A small group of pro-abortion-rights activists protested the march on Market Street, holding signs that read "Abortion on demand and without apology."

Anna Wilson, 20, a commercial artist who lives in San Francisco, said she participated in the Walk for Life march two years ago, but said she's since changed her stance on abortion.

"I realized I was looking at it in a real childish way," Wilson said. "I'm not pro-abortion. Nobody's pro-abortion. But I am pro-choice. I think that women should have every single choice available to them, as much as men do."

Supervisor David Campos introduced a resolution last week opposing the dozens of "Abortion Hurts Women" banners that organizers hung from street lamps on Market Street. The resolution says "the prominent display of false anti-abortion statements on public property on Market Street misrepresents the City's support for reproductive health, rights and justice."

Over the last several decades, anti-abortion groups have focused on placing relatively small restrictions on abortion, especially in conservative states with Republican-dominated legislatures. But lawmakers in those states are under increasing pressure from activists to take stronger action to limit abortion.

But California, which has a Democratic governor and Legislature, expanded abortion access last year with a measure that allows nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants to perform a type of early abortion.

Hospital: No decision on order to end life support

Erick Muñoz, husband of Marlise Muñoz, the woman at the center of the controvery (WFAA)

A spokeswoman for a Texas hospital won't say whether it will follow a judge's order to take a pregnant brain-dead woman off of life support.

Marlise Munoz, 33, who is believed to be about 22 weeks pregnant, "is deceased" and therefore not subject to a state law that prohibits withdrawal of treatment from a pregnant person, Judge R.H. Wallace ruled on Friday afternoon. The judge said the Fort Worth hospital had until Monday at 5 p.m. to remove Munoz from life support.

MORE | Judge orders brain-dead pregnant woman off life support

Hospital spokeswoman J.R. Labbe said that John Peter Smith Hospital wouldn't announce a decision on whether to appeal the ruling on Saturday.

The case has raised questions about end-of-life care and whether a pregnant woman who is considered legally and medically dead should be kept on life support for the sake of a fetus. It also has gripped attention on both sides of the abortion debate, with anti-abortion groups arguing Munoz's fetus deserves a chance to be born.

Husband Erick Munoz found his wife unconscious on Nov. 26, possibly due to a blood clot. He has said that she told him if she ever was in her present condition, she did not want to be kept alive.

The hospital says it has a legal duty to protect the fetus and is considering an appeal.

US Sen. candidate Paul Broun promises to give away AR-15

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 25 Januari 2014 | 15.20

(Drew Angerer/Getty Images)

ATLANTA -- US Representative and US Senate candidate Paul Broun (R-10 District) sent out a campaign email on Friday promising to give away a semi-automatic weapon to a lucky supporter.

The note asks a simple question of Broun's supporters: "How would you like to start off 2014 with a brand new AR-15 for free?"

The email points out that Broun is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment and that as one of the "most conservative members of Congress," he is constantly under attack for his ideals. The letter also states that President Barack Obama would "like nothing more than to ban the AR-15 rifle."

Broun also insists in the email that "Democrats and liberal media would love to take away our guns and mandate every aspect of our lives."

In order to enter the drawing, supporters need only provide their name, email address and zip code prior to the Thursday, February 27 deadline at Broun's campaign website. The giveaway's rules say US citizens and legal residents 18 years of age and older are eligible to enter.

The rules page states that there will be a random drawing from all the valid entries received for a single grand prize of an AR-15. The estimated prize value of the rifle is $1,300.

This is not the first time that Broun has stepped into controversy. In September 2012, when speaking to a group at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Ga., he referred to evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory of the universe's creation as "lies straight from the pit of hell."

Last September, Broun was named to a list of "most corrupt members of Congress" by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which cited a "failure to disclose the true source and terms of his campaign loans."

Atlanta Police looking for sexual assault suspect

Police said they are looking for the public's help in locating a suspect who they said sexually assaulted a woman in late December. (Crime Stoppers Atlanta)

ATLANTA - Atlanta Police are looking for the public's help for information leading to a suspect they said sexually assaulted a 20 year-old woman in late December.

Grave stone mystery solved

SNELLVILLE, Ga -- It was the mystery of the lost grave stone. A grave marker was found in a vacant home in Gwinnett County and no one knew where it belonged. The story turned dozens of 11Alive viewers into amateur detectives.

RELATED | Police have grave marker but no grave

Right after the story aired Wednesday we received a slew of Facebook comments from people who did some digging online; then came the emails and the tweets. Some said they had figured it out.

Gwinnett County Police said they received just as many calls and emails from concerned citizens and credit that response for possibly solving the mystery.

The grave stone reads: In Memory of Irene Stark "Loved by all" 1899-1991.

Police now believe they have found Irene Stark's relatives in Snellville. If it is her, Irene Stark was born in California in 1989. She died in Snellville in 1992. Family had her body cremated and sent to California where she is buried next to her husband Harold Stark.

"She's my great aunt," said Snellville resident Wayne Champion. "It's amazing how nice people were about trying to find out where the headstone belonged."

"The names right," said Champion's wife Carolyn. "The date is off by one year, she died in 1992, but I just couldn't imagine any other Irene Stark that lived in Gwinnett County at that time."

Wayne Champion thinks the grave stone is his great aunt's and it may have been thrown out because of the wrong date. He thinks it was a mistake because his great aunt died shortly after the New Year. "I guess the stone cutter must have forgotten instead of putting down the correct date, he put down '91," he said.

Champion said his great aunt lived through the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. In 1980 the San Francisco Examiner documented her recollection of the quake in a feature article.

Champion said his mother moved his great aunt from California to Snellville in 1985 after her husband died. She spent the last six years of her life in a personal care home in Snellville. She was 92-years old when she died.

A landlord found the grave stone while cleaning out a home that was recently vacated. The prior tenant told police he found the grave stone in a dumpster outside a nursing home in Snellville.

The interest from amateur sleuths who helped track down the Champions has amazed them. "Oh, I think she'd be tickled to death," said Wayne Champion. "She'd write a story about it because she always liked to write stories," his wife added.

The only mystery that stumps the Champions is why her grave stone, if it was a mistake, was still around 22 years after she died.

For families in the Fairmont subdivision, there is an undercurrent of concern and anxiety.

In the most recent incident, investigators said an 11 year-old boy described a man driving a black pick-up who he said tried to grab him as he walked home from a bus stop on Tuesday.

"We had a suspicious white male exit a black pick-up and walk quickly toward the young man who made the report to his parents that someone had chased him or pursued him," said --

Last week, in the Brooks Crossing neighborhood, about five miles away, a 7 year-old boy says a man, also driving a black pick-up, tried to grab him as he was playing basketball in his front yard.

The boys' description of the truck is similar - a small-to-mid-sized black pick-up, possibly a Ford Ranger or Mazda. The truck had a possible tag number of BXL-6164. But the boys' descriptions of the would-be kidnapper differs. In the first incident, the suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, with a slender build and wearing a fedora. The second boy described the suspect as a middle-aged overweight white male with a beard and no moustache.

Anyone with any information about the suspect is asked to call Gwinnett County Police or to call 911.

Georgia lawmakers propose allowing firefighters to carry guns on duty

In Gwinnett County, the police SWAT team rescued five firefighters taken hostage by a gunman who knew the firefighters were not armed, April 10, 2013.

ATLANTA -- It has been nine months since a man in Gwinnett County lured five firefighters into his home by faking a possible heart attack, and, knowing they were not armed, took them all hostage at gunpoint.

The police SWAT team was able to rescue the firefighters, shooting and killing the gunman.

Some Georgia state legislators believe that incident is key evidence in support of their efforts to authorize firefighters, statewide, to carry their own firepower while out on calls.

Rep. Kevin Cooke, (R), Carrollton, introduced a bill Thursday, called House Bill 807, co-signed by several other House members, to permit firefighters to carry firearms while on duty, if they wish, and if they have the permission of their superior officers.

Critics say the bill, if passed into law, would cause more problems than it would solve.

Supporters say the need is ever-present.

"I just think it's overkill," said Sen. Vincent Fort, (D), Atlanta, on Thursday. "Of course I'm concerned with [the firefighters'] safety. If there's a pattern of situations where firefighters are at risk, then yes. But I don't think we're at that point, now.... When people see firefighters, they're almost always glad to see them coming, because a firefighter means help. Arming firefighters will provide a distraction to their core functions, protecting people and serving the public."

"I think that anybody that has to be in public should be allowed to defend themselves anywhere they go," said Jerry Henry of GeorgiaCarrry.org. "This is a dangerous world. Firefighters are no different.... We have never said that everybody should be armed, we say that everybody should have the right to decide whether they want to be armed, or not. If they don't feel comfortable, don't do it. But if you feel uncomfortable, if you think that there are things like [the Gwinnett County hostage-taking] going to happen -- that happened once in how many, a hundred years or so?  But guess what?  Maybe it's going to happen again. And you don't want to be the guy that walks in there unarmed and at that guy's mercy."

In Gwinnett County, where the firefighters were taken hostage last year, Fire Chief Casey Snyder sent an email to 11Alive News on Thursday stating that he has no plans to allow his firefighters to arm themselves while they're on duty, even if the legislature passes this bill:

"The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services has no knowledge of the content of House Bill 807 nor did we participate in the writing of the bill. Regardless of the outcome, the department has no plans to change its current procedures. Anyone seeking information should contact the individuals or agencies responsible for the development of the bill."

More troubles for Target as they lay off 475 workers

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 23 Januari 2014 | 15.20

(USA Today) -- Target Corp. is laying off 475 workers after a massive information-security breach stole the retail giant's Christmas.

Minneapolis-based Target has also eliminated another 700 vacant positions over the last six months, company spokeswoman Molly Snyder said. The cuts are across the company's operations, except that no workers in Canada are being cut, she said.

The company has struggled recently. First, like some other retailers, it has lagged the performance of very high-end and very inexpensive retailers. Then last month, disclosure of a data breach that let hackers steal 40 million customers' credit card information from Target's systems. Earlier this month, it said other information about 70 million customers, including e-mail addresses, had also been stolen during the breach.

"Retailing is in a transformative time,'' Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said. "We're making decisions that will help us thrive and grow in the future.''

Target's problems in Canada, and the data breach, are just further complications for a company that has been caught between fellow discounters Wal-Mart and Costco, and especially hard-hit by competition from Amazon.com, William Blair analyst Mark Miller said in a Jan. 10 report.

"They used to be the best at selling value, on a broad assortment, to a higher-end consumer," Miller said. "Now there is someone else who does a better job at the exact same thing."

The 1,900 store chain employs 361,000 people, Snyder said. The affected workers will get at least 45 days severance, though longer-tenured workers may get more, she said. The company is continuing to recruit in some areas, especially to support its online and mobile commerce initiatives, she said,

The company said Jan. 10 that holiday sales had been running ahead of forecasts until the first data breach was disclosed Dec. 19, and turned "materially weaker" after the disclosure.

The company said comparable store sales would decline about 2.5% for the fourth quarter, compared with the same period in 2012. The company expects fourth-quarter earnings of $1.2 to $1.30 per share, compared with $1.50 to $1.60 before the breach was disclosed.

In the first nine months of the year, Target's net income fell 46%, with much of the blame falling on higher-than-expected losses on the company's Canadian expansion, according to Target's federal securities filings.

Snyder declined to say what parts of Target bore the brunt of the cuts. Local outlets in the Twin Cities reported large cuts in marketing, finance and technology services functions.

Cold temperatures still hanging around

(WXIA) -- After a morning of frigid temperatures greeted Wednesday morning commuters, temperatures are expected to remain cold into Thursday.

After daytime highs in the low-to-mid 30s across much of Metro Atlanta, overnight temperatures are expected to fall back into the low-to-mid 20s under clear skies.

11Alive Meteorologist Chris Holcomb says temperatures on Thursday are expected to move into the high 30s to near 40 degrees under partly cloudy skies. But another blast of cold air is expected to come back in Thursday night, taking temperatures back into the low teens once again.

In addition, highs on Friday will struggle to make it back to the freezing mark.

By Saturday, temperatures should begin to moderate a bit, with highs in the mid-to-upper 40s, and moving into the low 50s by Sunday.

Chris says that even colder weather could be in our future, with another cold snap on the way next week.

Plumbers around Metro Atlanta warn that with the next cold snap, we could see another stretch of frozen pipes in schools, homes and businesses around the area.

Burglars steal Habersham County firehouse equipment

Habersham County Fire Chief Jeff Cain, at Station 15, Wednesday, January 22, 2014

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- Grand theft at the firehouse:

Burglars broke into Fire Station 15 over the weekend while the volunteers were out, and stole practically everything, leaving the firefighters temporarily limited in their ability to save lives.

"They basically cleaned us out," said Habersham County Fire Chief Jeff Cain Wednesday night.

The burglars stole just about all the gear except the three fire trucks themselves, taking specialized fire fighting equipment and other tools such as chain saws and axes and generators.

And they stole the volunteers' medical equipment -- their automated external defibrillators and their medical jump bags.

Chief Craig was able to pull together enough spare equipment to keep Fire Station 15 open.

But at first, he said, it could have been a life threatening situation.

"Oh, most definitely. You know, when they steal your medical bags and your AEDs, I mean, you know, if you're responding to somebody that's having a heart attack or something like that, the AED's an important piece of equipment.... It just so happened that we didn't have a call, didn't have an emergency that was needed, in that time frame, and we're thankful for that and we're lucky."

Who would want to leave the volunteers without their life saving equipment and fire fighting gear?

Chief Craig said the burglars broke in through a window at the rear of the station. Their truck left tire tracks in the sod outside the rear door. He said it would have taken at least two people to haul everything away so quickly.

Wednesday night, Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell told 11Alive News that some of the medical equipment had just been found -- the AEDs and the jump bags. Someone dumped them on U.S. Forest Service land, along with some receipts for merchandise that was bought at some local stores, and other clues that Sheriff Terrell said he hopes will help his investigators find the burglars and the rest of the equipment.

The estimated replacement costs for all of the gear -- $8,000 to $10,000.

The county's insurance policy will pay for the gear that is not recovered, minus the $2,500 deductable.

"We're all angry," said Chief Craig. "They didn't just steal from us, they stole from the whole county," from the people the firefighters serve and protect. "When you come in and your trucks are basically stripped, it's disheartening."

The Chief said that, besides getting all the equipment back, he wants video surveillance equipment for all eight fire stations, and burglar bars for the windows, which he was working to buy and install prior to the burglaries.

Anyone with any information that might help investigators should call the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, 706-754-6666, or leave an anonymous tip with the Sheriff's Office:  Click Here

Sandy Springs murder causes international intrigue

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 22 Januari 2014 | 15.20

Eric Chepkuto, 37, of Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Eric Chepkuto came to America from Kenya in 1998 to get a degree and earn a living to support his family here and back in Kenya. Just when his life was looking up, he was murdered in his Sandy Springs apartment.

His murder didn't receive any news media attention when it happened. But it has sent shock waves across continents as a high profile case in Kenya.

Chepkuto recently graduated from Kennesaw State University. His wife said he planned to go back to Kenya to visit his mother in April. Instead she had to ship his body to Kenya to be buried. "It's been ten years since his mother has seen him and now I have to send him back to her in a box," his wife said. "And that's what really haunts me so bad."

She didn't want to be identified because she is afraid. Chepkuto's killer has not been caught.

His wife last saw him at around 10-PM on December 27, 2013 when she went to work. She came home the next morning to their apartment at around 8-AM. "The wife arrived home and found her husband face down in the bedroom," said Sgt. Ron Momon of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Police said Chepkuto was shot in the mouth. "It was horrifying," his wife said. "I didn't know what to think."

Although it has been over three weeks since he was killed, Chepkuto's wife said she still has a hard time realizing he's gone. "The other day I was expecting him to come home around 6:30 or something, because that's when he usually came home," she said. "It was just, so heart breaking."

While Chepkuto's death has received little news coverage here, that is not the case in his native Kenya. The case has been high profile and family members are calling on the Kenyan government to investigate his death.

"Whoever did this, they hurt a lot of people," Chepkuto's wife said. "They didn't just murder my husband, they murdered me, they murdered his mother, his father and all the thousands that loved him."

Sandy Springs Police say it appears that whoever murdered Chepkuto may have known him because there were no signs of forced entry at his apartment. "Detectives are still interviewing a number of people connected to the couple and awaiting results from forensic tests on evidence taken from the scene," said Capt. Steve Rose.

"I pray every night and day since this happened that God will bless the detectives in bringing the perpetrator to justice," Chepkuto's wife said.

Good Samaritan helps deaf hit and run victim

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Tuesday morning, Joanna Landrum did what many people would do when seeing someone in trouble: she stopped to help.

But she had no idea how much she would have to offer.

Landrum was driving on South Marietta Parkway around 7am Tuesday when she noticed a woman walking across the street in her rearview mirror.

It wasn't long before the first car hit that woman.

Marietta police spokesman David Baldwin said the woman was walking in the center turn lane near Lake Drive when she was clipped by a dark-colored passenger car.

The pedestrian tried to get out of the street, but was hit by a van before she could make it out of the way.

Baldwin said the passenger car drove away on South Marietta Parkway, but the van stayed on the scene, and its driver spoke to emergency responders.

Upon seeing the accident, Landrum says she immediately pulled over and called 911.

"There were already three people standing around her, and as I was walking up, they were saying 'she's deaf, she can't hear,'" Landrum said.

In 10th grade, Landrum chose American Sign Language as a high school elective. Twelve years later, she was able to recall enough of her skill to act as the victim's translator.

Baldwin said paramedics requested to keep Landrum on the scene because she was the only one who could communicate with the victim.

Landrum says she spent the entire day thinking about her unlikely encounter. She wrote Psalms 9:9 on her hand:

"He is shelter. A refuge in times of trouble," she read. "That's what I've held on to all day. I'm so thankful that she's safe and OK now."

The pedestrian was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries. Her name was not released. Baldwin said she is in stable condition and her injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

Baldwin said the van driver will not face charges, but police are looking for the passenger car.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Georgia native is getting her big break during the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia, but she isn't an athlete.

The Cohutta, Ga native says she wrote the song in 2010. Three years later, she got a call from the label for Voice champion, Danielle Bradbery, saying Badbery wanted to sing it and NBC wanted to use it for the Olympics.

"I just started balling because this song was such an emotional journey for me at that time," Hope said.

The song was born out of disappointment.

"I was feeling really beat down, like every song I brought in wasn't good enough," she said. "I told them I can write poor pitiful me all day long, but I wanted to write something uplifting that will help people feel good and give them some hope."

Hope says having her song chosen for the Olympics is a dream come true.

"I never would have imagined it happening. It's up there with playing at the Opry."

Taiji Cove dolphin hunt begins in Japan amid protests

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 19 Januari 2014 | 15.20

Despite protests from conservationists, an annual dolphin hunt took place Saturday at Taiji Cove in Japan.

According to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a Friday Harbor, Wash.-based non-profit group that protects marine life, five separate pods of Bottlenose dolphins - more than 250 in all, including babies and juveniles - "were driven into Taiji's infamous killing cove (Friday) and held overnight.

"Today, the members of the pod will face a violent and stressful captive selection process," the group warned Saturday. "Babies and mothers will be torn from each other's sides as some are taken for captivity, some are killed, and others are driven back out to sea to fend for themselves."

CNN reported that by the end of the day Saturday in Taiji, 25 dolphins had been removed from their pod and taken "to a lifetime of imprisonment," according to the group. One of them died in the process and will be butchered, the group said. The dolphins will be kept penned in the cove overnight before the selection process begins again on Sunday.

The annual dolphin hunt became controversial internationally after the 2009 Academy Award-winning documentary, The Cove detailed dolphin hunting practices in Japan.

Taiji is a Pacific coast town of about 3,200 in Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, about 50 miles south of Osaka.

Wakayama Prefecture officials issued a statement accusing environmentalists of "psychological harassment" and saying Taiji fishermen "are just conducting a legal fishing activity in their traditional way in full accordance with regulations and rules under the supervision of both the national and prefectural governments," according to United Press International.

In the USA, those voicing opposition to the hunt included Caroline Kennedy, who was sworn in last year as U.S. ambassador to Japan. "Deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing," she tweeted.

Agent: Dennis Rodman checks into alcohol rehab center

Dennis Rodman returned from North Korea last week. (Photo: Wang Zhao, AFP/Getty Images)

Dennis Rodman has checked into an undisclosed alcohol rehabilitation center to treat his long-time struggle with alcoholism, his agent says.

Darren Prince declined on Saturday to say which facility will treat Rodman and how long he will be there. Rodman recently returned to the United States from his latest trip to North Korea.

He later apologized for comments he made in North Korea about a detained American missionary, saying he had been drinking and was under pressure as he organized an exhibition game there. He also sang Happy Birthday to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the start of the friendly game.

PHOTOS | Dennis Rodman through the years

"What was potentially a historic and monumental event turned into a nightmare for everyone concerned," Prince said. "Dennis Rodman came back from North Korea in pretty rough shape emotionally. The pressure that was put on him to be a combination 'super human' political figure and 'fixer' got the better of him.

"He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful for the anger and hurt his words have caused."

Rodman won five NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls and was one of the NBA's fiercest rebounders and most colorful personalities. Detroit selected Rodman in the second round of the 1986 draft out of Southeastern Oklahoma. The native of Trenton, N.J., also played for Chicago, San Antonio, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas. He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in of 2011.

He stamped his name on "Dennis Rodman - The original Bad Ass Premium Vodka," late last year. It was in the works before his relations with North Korea, but has taken off since.

Rodman, known as much for his piercings, tattoos and bad behavior as he was for basketball, was the highest-profile American to meet Kim since Kim inherited power from father Kim Jong Il in 2011. He traveled to the secretive state for the first time last February with the Harlem Globetrotters for an HBO series produced by New York-based VICE television.

But the 52-year-old Rodman has been denounced for not trying to use his influence with Kim to secure the release of Kenneth Bae, an American missionary with health problems who is being held in North Korea on charges of "anti-state" crimes.

He organized a group of retired NBA players to travel to North Korea for that exhibition game. Rodman dedicated the contest to his "best friend" Kim, who along with his wife and other senior officials and their wives watched from a special seating area. The capacity crowd of about 14,000 at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium clapped loudly as Rodman sang a verse from the song.

Rodman had an angry meltdown before the game on CNN, defending his decision to travel to North Korea.

"People forget Dennis is just an entertainer and retired NBA star," Prince said. "The fact remains that a basketball game was played in North Korea live in front of 14,000 people and hundreds of millions around the world viewed clips of the game."
