Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 30 Juni 2013 | 15.20

ATLANTA -- An officer was involved in a hit and run Saturday morning while trying to direct a car into a parking lot.

Around 3 a.m., Officer Rodney Smither observed a silver Volkswagen back into a parked truck. The car was being driven by David Hamblen. Officer Smither approached Hamblen and asked him if he had hit the parked vehicle.

When Hamblen denied, Officer Smither stepped in front of Hamblen's vehicle to direct him into a parking lot.
Hamblen sped off, striking the officer with the hood of his car, knocking him to the ground.

A lookout was given over the radio and Georgia State Patrol located and stopped Hamblen at Briarcliff Rd and Johnson Rd.

Hamblen was later charged with a DUI, Aggravated Assault and Obstruction. He was transported to Fulton County Jail.

Officer Smither was examined on the scene by Grady EMS and only complained of minor soreness.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Just a day after a federal appeals court paved the way for same-sex marriages, City Hall in San Francisco was filled with dozens of gay couples ready to get their marriage licenses.

Sandy Stier and Kris Perry of Berkeley, the two lead plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case, led the way, becoming the first couple to marry in San Francisco on Friday.

On Saturday morning, long lines were seen stretching down the lobby of City Hall as city officials held weekend hours to let couples tie the knot during San Francisco's annual Pride weekend.

Friday's decision by the court lifted a 4-year freeze on the issue.

VIDEO | The Peachtree's 2013 secret t-shirts: The secret's safe with them

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 15.21

ATLANTA -- VIDEO | The Atlanta Track Club's AJC Peachtree Road Race has many traditions.

Among the traditions is the annual t-shirt awarded to the runners when they finish, as well as the secrecy surrounding the design of each year's t-shirt.

Only a relatively few people know what the top-secret design is each year, until runners open their t-shirt gift bags.

About 30 people in a vocational program for the developmentally disabled are among those in the know.  They work for Jewish Family and Career Services, and since Memorial Day they have been packing all 60,000-plus t-shirts into those plastic gift bags.

And they are not talking.

This is an important tradition for them.  They work from their hearts.  With the pride that comes from a job well done.

11Alive's Jon Shirek watched, and listened.

And in this video, in their own few and carefully-chosen words, we can all appreciate why the t-shirt tradition of secrecy is safe with them.

'Good Samaritan' confronts robber, robber shoots man's 2-year-old son

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - A two year old boy was shot outside a Kroger Supermarket in Stone Mountain Wednesday afternoon after his father intervened to stop a mugging and then fought with the robber.

The child is in stable condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, according to DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander.

The gunman is on the run.

PHOTOS | Stone Mountain Kroger shooting

Here's what led up to the shooting, according to witnesses and Chief Alexander.

At about 1:00 p.m., a man saw someone getting mugged in the parking lot of the Hairston Village Shopping Center, at Memorial Drive and N. Hairston Road.

The man intervened and stopped the mugging.

The man and the mugger ended up fighting each other.

They were fighting just outside the entrance to the Kroger Supermarket.

The mugger pulled out a gun and started shooting. He fired several rounds. He shot in the direction of the man's car, which was parked next to the entrance. The man's wife and two-year-old son were in the car, and their son was shot at least once, in the stomach.

The gunman got away.

Someone carried the boy into the Kroger and placed him on top of one of the check-out counters.

A pharmacist gave first-aid while the ambulance was on the way.

The boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Kroger customers heard the shots. Some dropped to the floor. A store manager asked everyone to go to the rear of the store for safety.

"All of a sudden, we heard pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. About five or six shots," said one customer, Evelyn Hearns of Stone Mountain. "And you seen them open the back door [of the car] and bring out this baby, and they laid him across the registers [inside the supermarket]. And that's when the mama, she was just hysterical."

"It was really crazy," said another customer, Briana Usher. "We heard gunshots and screaming."

She said store employees helped customers to the back of the store, and they were locked inside the store until police arrived.

"It was so scary," said Betty Sheferaw. "Everybody just kind of bent down on the ground."

"I just fell out on the floor," said a man as he was leaving the store.

When police arrived they roped off the parking lot and began interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence. K-9 officers walked their dogs through the parking lot trying to pick up the gunman's scent.

Chief Alexander said investigators hoped the store's surveillance cameras recorded clear video of the gunman, to help them identify and catch him.

The man's car was riddled with bullets, and the windows were shot out.

At about 5:30 p.m. police towed away the car and allowed Kroger to re-open.

Chief Alexander praised the man who intervened, calling him a Good Samaritan.

"We had a Good Samaritan who got himself involved in trying to help someone else," Alexander said.

Alexander did not yet have details of the initial confrontation, when the man first spotted what he believed to be a robbery in progress in the shopping center parking lot.

He said the man successfully stopped that mugging, saving the victim.

The initial confrontation was at one end of the expansive parking lot, near Memorial Drive.

But the Kroger is at the far end of the parking lot, and Alexander said he was not sure, yet, how the two men ended up there for the second confrontation that ended with the gunfire.

"This is such a sad and tragic incident here today, it's just horrible," Alexander said.

He talked, briefly, with the man.

"He appears to be just a real, very soft-spoken, very kind man, and very tearful, right now, as well, too."

And, the Chief said, he was unarmed.

"This was just a very good man who was trying to help someone else, but our prayers are with this child and with the family."

Alexander hoped police would soon be able to release photos of the man taken from the surveillance cameras, and ask the public's help identifying and catching him.

Anyone with any information can call DeKalb County Police, or 911.

More accusations against Paula Deen empire

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 24 Juni 2013 | 15.20

ATLANTA -- A few days after the Food Network chose not to renew Paula Deen's contract over a racial slur she used in the past, a civil and human rights organization is now saying her companies continue to discriminate against minorities. Robert Patillo, a lawyer for Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH coalition, said he learned of troubling practices in the companies before this week's media firestorm.

"The 'n word' is the smallest portion of this," Patillo said. "It's the manifestation of those personal prejudices into employment policies that have worked to injure individuals."

Patillo traveled to Savannah Thursday to speak with five current and former Deen employees. He plans to continue the investigation next weekend. Patillo said so far 13 employees from Deen's companies have come forward. They said blacks were held back from promotions and racist and sexist jokes were tolerated. One restaurant manager allegedly called an employee a monkey.

"We often find there is one side, another side, and then the truth is somewhere in between," Patillo said. "We'll gather information and we'll issue the information we gather once it's completed."

Deen has repeatedly apologized for using a racial slur in the past. She admitted to using the word during a deposition related to her brother's racial discrimination lawsuit. Her company has not responded to the allegations levied by Rainbow/PUSH.

A Facebook page supporting her has received 225,000 "likes" in the last two days.

Nelson Mandela in critical condition

(NBC) -- Former South African president Nelson Mandela, 94, is now in critical condition, officials say.

Mandela's condition worsened in the past 24 hours.

Mandela has been hospitalized in Pretoria since June 8 for a recurring lung infection. Previously, authorities had described his condition as serious but stable.

His history of lung problems dates to when he was a political prisoner on Robben Island during the apartheid era, and he has battled respiratory infections.

Mandela has become increasingly frail over the years and has not appeared in public since South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010.

The anti-apartheid hero has been in and out of the hospital in recent years.

Paula Deen as she appeared in an apology video posted online on June 21, 2013

(WXIA) -- According to a Food Network spokesperson, Paula Deen's contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June.

This news comes just days after Deen confessed to and apologized for making racially offensive comments about African-Americans.

"Please forgive me for the mistakes I made," Paula Deen said at the end of a 46 second video released by the Food Network personality Friday afternoon.

Deen remains at the center of a media firestorm over revelations that in a deposition released this week, she admits to using racial slurs.

Friday morning, Deen was scheduled to appear in a live interview with Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today Show," for which Deen was a no-show.

The text of the video, which stars with the title "Paula Deen Statement" against a dark screen:

I want to apologize to everybody for the wrong that I've done. I want to learn and grow from this...inappropriate and hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable. I've made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I beg you, my children, my team, my fans, my partners, I beg for your forgiveness. Please forgive me for the mistakes that I've made.

The video was released after a single-line Twitter message earlier in the afternoon which promised the statement "shortly." The video contains several unexplained cuts during its length.

On Friday evening, Paula Deen released another video where she explained her absence from a scheduled appearance on NBC's "Today Show." During the video, she also describes her family's racial philosophy and apologizes profusely.

Murder suspect's 9-year-old daughter urges him to turn himself in

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 21 Juni 2013 | 15.20

DECATUR, Ga. -- Sitting on her aunt's lap, 9-year-old Nature Dennard turned to the camera and, with a maturity well beyond her years, appealed directly to her father Angelo to turn himself in to police.

"I love him. And I forgive him. But he knows he did some stuff wrong," Nature said. "He needs to turn himself in."

DeKalb County Police say Dennard is wanted for the murder of 27-year-old Diana Cruz, the mother of his four children.

Dennard's family said he shot Cruz in the head Sunday night as his mother and two of the couple's children looked on in horror.

"We heard a pop from the gun. She fell to the ground," Dennard's mother Stephanie said. "I ran inside with the kids and called 911."

Stephanie Dennard contacted 11Alive News because she wanted to urge her son to turn himself in. Before we concluded our interview, Nature arrived home and asked if she too could deliver a message to her father.

With her family's permission and blessing, the courageous 9 year old urged her father to do the right thing and end the police manhunt.

$17.5 million Lake Lanier home to be auctioned

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- It's a dream home: a $17.5 million dollar house built 10 years ago in Gainesville along the shore of Lake Lanier.

On Monday, the house goes to online auction. The bidding starts at $1.5 million. On Thursday night, homeowner George Donovan -- who has never lived in the house -- gave 11Alive a tour.

Donovan says his family has changed and his children live elsewhere, so he doesn't need a palatial custom estate.

For two years Donovan tried to sell the home and couldn't, so now it's the gavel of the online auction

Here is the tale of the tape:

6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, guest house, tennis court, 13.5 acres, 24,000 square feet, 2 docks, 4-car garage with apartment, home theatre, steel structure, all stone and brick masonry.

Little girl hits big screen as Weather Channel anchor

ATLANTA -- If you turned to the Weather Channel Thursday, you saw that the star of the network was not a new storm or a dangerous weather system but a 4-foot tall little girl, far from home, and living her dream on live television.

The Weather Channel revolved around Sophia, an 8-year-old cancer patient on Thursday. She took over the entire building, every employee wore her name, every screen was filled with her. Sophia has her own studio, green room, elevator and even some personalized swag -- she was definitely the main event.

She traveled all the way from Seattle for her magic day which was made possible by the Make a Wish Foundation. Sophia is battling rhabdomyosarcoma, a tumor discovered behind her eye. Although Sophia has endured grueling, punishing treatment, she has not lost her passion which is weather.

Sophia's parents say she listened to a weather radio before she got dressed for school every day and that she was absolutely crazed with weather. So her wish to the Make A Wish Foundation was to be a Weather Channel anchor. And it came true.

The Weather Channel transformed for Sophia -- and in return -- she transformed and charmed everyone at the Weather Channel and across America.

There is no sign of the tumor.

Consider today the ultimate audition for a girl who says she is stronger because of the past year, who says she will grow up and become a meteorologist.

We have no doubt.

Ellis indictment just latest DeKalb County scandal

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The man who became DeKalb County's top politician four years ago as a reformer has been under a cloud of suspicion since his home and office were raided last January.

MORE | DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis indicted on 15 counts

But after he bonded out of jail Tuesday night, DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis insisted he's innocent of corruption charges.

"I've done nothing wrong and I would never, ever, ever do anything to violate the public trust," Ellis said.

Ellis surrendered after being indicted on 15 extortion, theft and conspiracy charges.

He's accused of strong arming companies doing business with the county for campaign contributions and threatening to fire them if they didn't comply.

It's just the latest scandal to hit DeKalb in just the past few years.

Former School Superintendent Crawford Lewis is still awaiting trial on his 2010 indictment for racketeering charges.

He's accused of taking kickbacks on school construction contracts.

Last December, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put DeKalb on academic "probation" thanks to a dysfunctional, infighting school board.

In March, Governor Nathan Deal replaced 6 of the 9 school board members.

And now Ellis is indicted for alleged corruption.

All of this leaves many DeKalb County taxpayers' heads spinning.

"I don't know why there's so much corruption; it's terrible," DeKalb resident April Tucker told 11 Alive News on Wednesday.

"I feel very upset because one looks up to these people and expects them to always be honest," said resident Michael Barlow.

"When these kind of things happen, it doesn't just affect those involved, it just kinda puts a black eye on the county as a whole," said resident Carl Grimes.

DeKalb County Commission Chairman Lee May, who could be named acting CEO if Governor Deal replaces Ellis, issued a statement saying, "This is a sad day for DeKalb County."

He called the indictment a distraction that "continues to bring unwelcome negative publicity to our county and government."

May would not do an on camera interview, however.

Meanwhile, Governor Deal will soon appoint a special panel to look into whether Ellis should be suspended while he awaits trial.

Police confiscate 188 pounds of marijuana from 'grow house'

Inside a marijuana grow house in Alpharetta (Alpharetta PD)

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Police said they seized 188 pounds of marijuana plants from an unoccupied home on Waters Run Drive in Alpharetta.

Alpharetta police initially came to the home after a telephone report of an open garage door at a residence. When police arrived, they said they found the house unsecured.

PHOTOS | Pot seized from Alpharetta grow house

While checking out the home, police said they found what they called a large professional grow operation in the home. After checking the home, police obtained a search warrant to more thoroughly investigate the home.

Police said investigators found the home had been structurally altered. They said there was no furniture on the home's main level, and holes had been created through three floors of hardwood flooring up to the ceiling areas. Investigators said large industrial duct work had been created to travel from the basement to the top floor and foaming insulation had been placed against the walls.

They found that elaborate electrical and watering systems had been installed. Police said it appeared power was being stolen as it bypassed the residential electrical meter. Numerous marijuana plants, they said, were discovered in various stages of growth in many rooms in the home, receiving lighting form dozens of large refractor lamps.

Detectives confiscated more than 250 marijuana plants, totaling 188 pounds. The plants had a street value of more than $850,000.

Police said they the home was a rental residence, and that the owner of the home had no knowledge of the criminal activity taking place there. Detectives said they have identified a person of interest, and that they are continuing their investigation.

Four-year-old hopes for new kidney -- from his dad

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 19 Juni 2013 | 15.20

CUMMING, Ga. -- At a time of year known for celebrating fathers, one metro Atlanta dad is hoping to give the most important of presents to his son.

"This piece is so small compared to what he has to go through every day," says Seth Harding of Cumming. "I know it's nothing compared to what he's always known."

Ephraim Harding is four years old and has had major kidney issues since he was in his mother's belly. His kidneys failed to properly develop, and parents Seth and Rebecca were told he would not survive past 20 weeks of his mother's pregnancy.

Ephraim made it to 20 weeks, then 30, then through a difficult birth, which doctors warned he might not survive.

Recalls his dad, "The doctor just stopped me [before my wife went into the delivery room] and told me, 'Before you go in here, just understand ... Don't expect him to come out of here alive.'"

"I was begging God," Seth Harding says, "just like, 'Please don't take him yet. I haven't had a chance to hold him, haven't had a chance to tell him a story. Just please don't take him yet.'"

Today Ephraim wears a port and takes a daily concoction of pills. He goes through dialysis three times a week of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. He has learned an inordinate amount about his condition.

Last month he learned his kidneys had finally failed. He will need a new kidney -- and soon.

That is where his dad comes in.

Seth signed up as soon as he could to get tested to donate a kidney to his son. He went through, as he calls it, "a battery of tests" last week at Emory University Hospital.

"I'm really nervous that I won't be able to give," Seth said, "and I'm waiting on a phone call right now that should tell me just the opposite."

Seth will find out Wednesday if he has passed all the necessary tests. In the meantime, he simply appreciates the opportunity to be with his child.

"He's my son," Seth said. "I wouldn't do anything different. We already gave him life just with birth, and now helping him stay alive, it's the only thing I would do."

Added the proud father, "As far as I'm concerned, he could have both of them."

Vedo's Long Road to The Voice

ATLANTA, -- In a small Atlanta studio, Vedo is putting the finishing touches on his first single.

"It has to be something people can gravitate towards."

He is making the most of the spotlight, as one of the 12 finalists on NBC's The Voice -- working on his music, singing in 11 Alive's telethon for victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes, and last night, back in Los Angeles for The Voice Finale.

When America first met Vedo, he was wowing his idol Usher in the blind audition. No one watching this smiling, charismatic 20 year old had any idea what he went through to get here.

"We were in and out of shelters."

An hour outside Detroit, Vedo and his two brothers endured a homeless childhood, raised by a mother who allowed no excuses.

"We used to wash up in gas station bathrooms, sleeping in the car, getting up, brushing our teeth in the bathroom and then go to school. My mom didn't allow failure just because what's going on at home."

But Vedo saw things no child should have to see."My mom had some very abusive relationships, almost to the point where she was beaten half to death and I witnessed it, me and my brothers witnessed it. And we couldn't do anything. We were little. We were itty bitty kids. We couldn't do anything but cry."

By the time he was a teenager, Vedo was in and out of juvenile detention centers. He was stealing. He was fighting. All the time.

"If somebody said something about my shoes, it's going down. If somebody said something about my clothes, we're going to fight."

The one constant in Vedo's unstable life, music. And that voice. It won him friends. And girls.

"I was definitely a lady's man. I was definitely a lady's man," he says, laughing.

When he was 14 years old, Vedo's mother sent him to live with his father in Atlanta. Under the threat of no more music, Vedo stopped fighting and started getting A's and B's at South Dekalb Highschool.

And then his voice landed him on The Voice.

At the same time, Vedo's mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. She saw his blind audition, taped in the Fall. She died one month before his national debut.

On taking the stage without her, Vedo says it was "The hardest thing I've ever done in my life."

On stage, Vedo tucked the grief away. But every performance was for her.

"I miss everything about her man. Every every everything. There's nothing I don't miss about her. Sorry."

Vedo didn't make it to the finals. But he's traveled further than most in just 20 years.

"When I look back over everything I've done I've come from -- this to this to this -- and now look at me. I made the top 12, national television, 17 million people watching. I'm not mad at that. That ain't bad."

The exposure from The Voice is helping Vedo work, and dream -- big.

"I want to be labeled entertainer of the year, entertainer of the world."

He was a boy who fought to get by, a young man who fought to get out. Vedo is still fighting but now it's for the person he loves and misses most.

"I'm still going to be striving to make her proud. I know she's watching. I feel her watching."
